Say No To New Year's Resolutions

I gave up New Year's Resolutions a long time ago because I realized that I was never going to see them through. I was just too flaky.

The truth is, I was not alone.
The bonus from doing this was that I did feel a little better about myself. You see, when we set New Year's Resolutions and Goals and then forget about bringing them to fruition, we tell ourselves and everybody that is associated with us that we just don't take ourselves or our success seriously.
There are 5 reasons that New Year's Resolutions Fail:
Lack of clarity. We're fuzzy about them and they aren't tied to anything of substance. Take the ever popular, I'm going to get in shape this year.
I go to the gym every morning. The first two weeks of January you can hardly get to any of the equipment. It's like swatting at flies to get the people out of your way. Then, the 15th of January comes along and it is dead. Everyone has disappeared. The trainers are running around looking for people under mats.
We set goals that we really don't want badly enough. We have no true authentic conviction. Usually, it's because it wasn't our idea in the first place.
Our goals and New Year's Resolutions are not grounded in any kind of reality.
We set some pretty ridiculous New Year's Resolutions. I believe that one of the reasons that we do it is so that we have an out. We know that there is no way anybody, let alone us, could make these things happen. This way when we fail to reach them we can say honestly that there was just no way anybody could have done it.
We lack the tools needed to succeed. We don't have the mindset, the techniques, the strategies and we don't do the preparation needed to get to the target.
Lack of ownership. So many of the goals that we set are based on guilt or obligation. We set them because others want us to make the changes, we don't.
We were talking about all of this on the MOBE Power Up Call this morning with JT Debolt. Now, he didn't just leave us hanging with all of the reasons that would allow us to eliminate the need to set goals and/or New Year's Resolutions. No, indeed not.
Set effective New Year's Resolutions and Goals:
1. Start by really nailing down what it is that you want and define it as clearly as you possibly can. Then, connect it with the "why" that lies in the depths of your soul.
2. Get serious and make a 100% commitment to achieving the goals that you have set for yourself. Ask yourself if this is something that you are willing to fail at even after you have given everything to succeed.
3. Get real and get realistic. You want to set goals that you can achieve but that stretch you. You can always make the goal bigger if you hit it before the end of the year.
Wrap your head around it. Don't worry about the how of it right now. Just make a habit of doing the things that will get you to where you want to go and scale up once that is set in stone.
4. Get equipped. Listen to CD's or podcasts, read books, find a coach or trainer that has excelled in this field and use them to get the personal development that you need embedded in your head and your heart. Learn their strategies and techniques for success.
5. Own it. Take 100% responsibility for seeing this through to it's conclusion.
You owe it to yourself and to your customers to set goals and yes, even New Year's Resolutions, to prove that you can see things through to a successful conclusion. You can definitely do it.
Be sure to leave us your comments before you leave us today.

The truth is, I was not alone.
- 45% of people set resolutions
- 92% fail to achieve them
- 24% fail to even work on them after the first 2 weeks
