A number of people love it, a number of people hate it - and many people like to hate it.

Your favorite social network is shifting again, and this time for the greater.

In an announcement last week, Facebook unveiled their new News Feed FYI blog to "highlight important updates to News Feed and clarify the thinking behind them."

Do you realize that on average each time somebody visits their Facebook News Feed, there are on average 1,500 possible posts for them all to see? 1, 500 - that amount includes posts from family, friends, co-workers and company / nonprofit / brand Pages!

So just the best way to make sense of all the noise and continuously improve the Facebook encounter showing you exactly what is most useful and timely - All personalized to your own individual wants and desires?

Enter Narrative Bumping and Last Actor.

1) The initial Facebook change for the News Feed is Story Bumping.

I prefer this one, since it works for individuals which are not on Facebook all-day.

Story Bumping enables mature posts from earlier in the day - ones that are quite popular, receiving a higher number of opinions, shares and enjoys - to become "bumped" around the very best of a user's News Feed after in the afternoon.

How much before in the day and how far back the posts will go depends on quite a number of variables - how many friends you have, how many Pages and individuals you follow and how many times every day you check in to Facebook. (For more on this, read my posts on EdgeRank.)

Now it's active on practically all desktop users with mobile coming soon. Exciting!

2) The second change is called Last Actor. Last Actor computes and regards the last 50 steps that the individual person has performed around the website.

Actions include writing about a friend's timeline, enjoying a Page, sharing a picture, commenting.

Needless to say, Last Actor takes into account EdgeRank to find out what steps are the most relevant to your life - Are you writing on your own boyfriend's page and sharing a photograph from a restaurant you frequent?

Thus, what do these shifts mean for the social media marketing strategy?

1) Recognize that Facebook isn't right now and will never be Twitter. Facebook will never show you posts chronologically. Yes, whenever you login on mobile and in the desktop you can select the "Most Current" operate, but Facebook isn't made to show you posts this way.

Chris Cox, Facebook's Vice President of Goods has frequently stated that there's a "vital difference in operation" between the two sites.

These philosophical and operational differences need different methods. Don't push out content to Twitter and NEVER push tweets to Facebook. Automated content doesn't perform as well as content you post on each individual website and tailor to every audience. There are no short-cuts.

2) It's even more significant than ever to truly get your supporters engaged. Actively ask your fans to really go to your own page and like, discuss and comment at least once per week.

Describe the brand new modifications to them, be excited, ask them for their participation as well as their thoughts on how best to get more Facebook engagement.

This is really a wonderful work for Online Brand Ambassadors!

3) You should get aggressive and try new things.

The old way of throwing something in the wall and hoping that it sticks no longer works (it never actually did, but even less so now).

Swallow your pride and experimentation with Facebook ads and promoted posts.

Try posting at new times of day if the old times are not working. Determine what resonates with your community using Facebook Graph Research and discuss it often.

4) Always remember that it's not about you.

It's not about you and what you need to share on Facebook. It's in what your fans and supporters wish to read and to share, when and where they need to read and discuss it.

Don't try to change your online community - change your method.
