Everyone's an expert

I shake my head a lot recently when I read and hear everyone calling themselves some sort of internet marketing expert. Recently the buzz is in calling yourself a social media expert. Unfortunately all that seems to entail is that you know how to login to a Facebook and make a Wall post. When, in reality, any real marketer (or Social Media Manager) with common sense would say that a lot more goes into a Social Media campaign and tracking said results of the campaign.

Being a media manager and testing something online to find out it doesn't work doesn't mean you ARENT an expert... but if you just throw your hands up and aren't able to embrace the challenges and the 'screw ups' to learn new/better and more efficient ways, then you shouldn't be in marketing.

I personally coach people in Internet Marketing (and more specifically have a couple people I train solely in Social Media Marketing). Although I'm always learning. Just last week I was talking with a friend about her Social campaign as it was doing well and doing well with something I've never used before.

People I coach in Social Media Marketing always come back amazed at the results they get. Not because they weren't sure of themselves, or of my teaching.... but because they see so many people in their field along with friends who try Social Media campaigns and fail. Some fail so bad they are out of the business the next day. It's all about learning (knowledge is the biggest power in the world), staying on top of new/changing technology or methodology, and having self confidence.

And certainly my last personal bit of advice that I take very personally... Don't coach someone if you're not experienced yourself. You are just setting that person up for failure.
