Amazon has giving us an amazing platform with their Kindle Direct Publishing service. It's a great opportunity for indie authors to make money with their books.

Things are not as easy as they used to be.

Back when Kindle was new, you could publish a book, give it away for free for a couple of days, and make money.

That method doesn't work anymore. It takes a lot more to make money with your Kindle books, but it's definitely still doable.

Here are some tips.

Write Series

I'm a member of several groups for writers, and I've noticed a pattern.

A lot of writers were crying about not getting sales, until suddenly they got their business up and running.

Magic usually happened after book 3, 4 or 5.

If you're writing fiction, make it easy for yourself and write series.

Series also work for non-fiction, but at least stay in the same genre, so your readers can grab more books from you, if they liked the first one.

Write Well

I've seen a lot of authors use badly written content. They pay a ghostwriter $60 and they get rubbish. If you're having your content ghostwritten, you'll most likely have to pay more than $60 for a full book.

And if you're writing yourself, then write well. Do your best.

Cover and Description

Your cover must look professional and fit with the genre. Unless you're a really good graphic designer, you should probably outsource this part or buy PLR covers you can change yourself.

Get Out to Your Readers

If nobody knows your book is out there, it's hard to sell it. You have to let your potential readers know about your book. If it's a really good niche, you've found, then this will happen without you having to do anything. Or else you might have to pay for adverts, give away free books, and do other kind of marketing.

Choose Your Niche/Category Well

My experience is that if you pick your niche well, and have a great cover and description, then your book will sell itself. I recently found such a niche, and my book sold a lot of copies almost instantly and ranked at around 19K after 28 hours. It ranked even better later.

I show proof for that ranking as well as tell how I found the niche on my blog.

Extra tip: Write Short to Begin With

I made a big mistake in one profitable niche I entered. I aimed for a longer book. Now the niche seems saturated and much harder to enter.

When you write shorter books, you can easier come out with series, and it takes you shorter time to find out whether or not the niche is profitable.

How short books?

Well, I recently found a book, 11 pages long, that made $1,238 per month. You can read about that niche and how I found it on my blog.

You'll also see that Amazon actually likes short reads. They have created a whole category for that. So short is good.
