Nelson Mandela is an icon worthy of emulation. Leading a apartheid South Africa out of its darkest days, and turning it into a country of potential, he has certainly made a deep impression both in his country and beyond. Sure, what he had done dealt more with politics, but these can serve as inspiration for us in the business field. How many marketing campaigns have we failed, how many problems have we faced, how many issues have we dealt with? Mandela surely faced them, too, in essence. What he believes in, what drove him, surely can serve as a guide for us all. Let us take a look at the few.
“It always seems impossible until it’s done.” – when you are about to roll out a new product, plan a marketing campaign, or probably negotiate with a tough client, you always have the impression of insurmountable odds. The nice thing here is that, once you put your feet into it, you actually meet your goals. So go ahead, take the first step, and just finish it.
“There is no passion to be found in playing small” – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” – when you organize a marketing campaign, it never hurts to aim him. Experience will tell you just how difficult it could be to reach goals. If you, personally, just think of raising the stakes very high, then even not reaching them would still put you in a good spot.
“We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right.” – there is always the right time to do everything. The only question here is how you use it. Do not waste your time on unnecessary actions. Go straight to the point and stick to your actual goals.
“Money won’t create success, the freedom to make it will.” – let us think of it as an incentive for your employees. Giving them monetary rewards to get more sales is good, but that in itself will not compel them to work harder. It is by giving them the leeway to handle the problem in their own terms would you be able to come up with excellent marketing solutions.
“A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.” – sure, you need to be smart when handling negotiations and the like, but it takes a good disposition to gain the cooperation of the other party. That would take an exceptional person to take care of it, then.
Nelson Mandela has made a mark in history. It is up to us to decide on how to best follow the shadow he has cast in front of us.
