Over the last few years the public domain has become a serious passion of mine. I am always thinking of ways that I can utilize the public domain to pump out money making products while at the same time maintaining an interest in what I am producing.

Several years back I began running a weekly feature on one of my websites that I called “Saturday Morning Cartoons”. What I would do is take old cartoons that were in the public domain and provide them for my visitors viewing pleasure. It was an instant hit, the feedback that I received was great. Those cartoons alone generated plenty of traffic. That got me to thinking, if people really enjoy watching these cartoons on my site, how much would they enjoy watching them on their own television. So I took action and began producing public domain cartoons on DVD and selling them on sites such as eBay.

Doing this was fairly simple, I already knew where to find these public domain cartoons, and I gauged interest into which cartoons were more popular based on the traffic generated for each individual cartoon that I posted on my website. After figuring out which cartoons gauged the most interest I would locate a collection of them, download them for free (majority of the time) , convert them to the proper format, burn them to a DVD, create labels and sell them.

All you really need to get started is a target market, if not your own website then eBay will work just as well. An AVI to DVD convertor, a DVD burner, a printer to create your DVD labels and that’s about it!

I didn't stop with cartoons though. I later expanded to feature films and even old time radio shows. Some sold better than others but the most important thing is that they sold and my out of pocket expense was next to nothing.
