Blogging is a great way to generate free traffic to your website when done correctly. Here are the golden rules I use when I post my blog. #1: I want to post something that the reader can find value in.
#2: 80/20 content: 80% must be for the reader and the last 20% is my call to action.
#3: My headline has to match what I am trying to convey. If you "trick" the reader to click to your post then you have forever lost his trust. There are more tricks I use but these are the main 3. Start with that and you'll be getting free traffic in no time.
