I sat through a TOTALLY KICK BUTT Google webmaster seminar yesterday.

Since the main presentation was about Google myths, one of the very first issues to come up was the issue of the "Duplicate Content Penalty."

I am happy to report that as far as Google is concerned, the Duplicate Content Penalty is no more!

That's right, there is no longer a penalty for having duplicate content on your website nor was there ever really a penalty to begin with.

When Google detects duplicate content on your website (meaning the same content on the same domain) it will simply choose one of them as the preferred version and display that one in the SERPs.

No penalty, no worries, no bad feelings.

So some of you may be wondering how to tell Google which one you want to be the preferred page. Well that's simple really...

In your XML site map, include the page you want to be preferred...leave out the one you don't.

This information couldn't be more up-to-date as I learned this all straight from the horses mouth YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

Of course, this only applies to Google (as far as I know) and has nothing to do with the rules and policies of the top article directories like ezinearticles.com or website-articles.net!

Hope this helps!

Respectfully,
Allen Graves

I started a thread about this where I created 10 blogs with exactly the same content. So far, they all are in the serps with different rankings but I cannot see any penalty. Just letting you all know.

Good news. I always thought that the duplicate penalty was nonsense. Glad to hear that it is.
