Adding Monetization With Amazon
Posted 10th January 2009 at 07:27 PM by Debbie Songster
Well, today's been a busy day on the www.fitstartingtoday.com site.
I've install quite a few little applications and modules and did a video to show how to install Amazon's Astore application.
So, let's get busy looking at all the new things that's been put on the site. One of the first things I did was change some of the article features. One of the complaints about Joomla is it doesn't have the same blog type capabilities as WordPress. Meaning people can't post comments on the blog posts. That's no longer true. You can now get modules for blogging that can easily be added to Joomla. But today I found a comment feature that can be added to any article on your Joomla site. It functions the same way as the comment feature on a WordPress site with a few extra twists.
A service called Intense Debate provides comment functionality for any type of website including WordPress. Yes, it's a third-party function but it has a lot of really cool features you can check it out at http://intensedebate.com/
So now I can add a comment function to each of my pages on Joomla - or not. Its entirely up to me where it goes. This increases site stickiness by encouraging visitors to participate on your website. To make this function properly on Joomla a module has been created and you can get the module here at http://extensions.joomla.org/extensi...s/6592/details
Go check it out and see how it works.

Another thing I did today was to add Amazon products to the site. Each main topic was attached to a single article type page but I decided to turn that into a wrapper and have it contain many Amazon websites. So if you go and look under dieting, the first page now contains Amazon products. Each main section will contain its own product specific Amazon store page. People will be able to buy directly from this page without even leaving the fit for starting.com site.
The commission structure on Amazon is not very large but it does work to give you extra content on the site with some earning capabilities. Along the top of each of these Amazon pages the plan is to include blocks of other affiliate products and a few of my own downloadable type products for direct purchase.
At the present time only the dieting topic has a block of articles and it would eventually each main topic will contain their own articles.
To install the Amazon pages is really quite simple and I've done a video to show you exactly how it's done. You can view the video online at the following address.

Enjoy the video! It took a while to get it done, IE kept crashing on me.
Let me know what you think of the video - if you like them, I'll keep doing them.

Nspire - I'm working on more videos right now. Do you have a specific topic or request?
bobmcalister - probably the best place to put amazon stuff on wordpress is on the side bars. Use an html widget for that.
On the part of the video where I grab the code there is the code that automatically puts it in an iframe - try that. I haven't tried it - yet
Sounds like I should do another video - huh?Posted 12th January 2009 at 11:30 AM by Debbie Songster

Hi Debbie,
Interesting video. Make things look a lot easier. I've grown a long beard
working for the last 3 weeks on my first website. As I have no web dev experience I decided to go with joomla. after the video, I had a look at your site. Looks good almost what I had in mind. however, from my reading, I learnt that adding an About Us page looks more professional and give better impression to visitors. But with someone of ur stature u must have a good reason why not include one. Can u please give me a hint.
Another thing, yesterday, I discovered Virtuamart. I found that it make it easy to add products to the site. I was going to use it with amazon products, but I didn't know howto. Now, after I saw ur video..it is the wrapper that looks more suitable. But just for the sake of my curiosity. Did u try virtuamart?
One last question. Can I add products from other merchants to a website built for amazon aff program?

I haven't added an about me page because I haven't gotten around to it yet. This site is a demo/semi serious build. I work on it between other projects. Its not top priority for me right now so there are lots of things that should or could be on that site but aren't yet.
As for Virtuamart. Thats for selling your own products not someone else's. Like if you wanted to have a store of your own products for sale.
The Amazon "store" you saw on my site is controlled totally by Amazon. Non of those features are actually on my site. I created that using a frame (wrapper).
There are other pieces of software that work really well with Joomla if you promote other physical products . You can see how I did it on one of my other sites Its A Halloween Thing - Halloween Costumes for adults, infants & pets | Ghost Stories & morePosted 15th January 2009 at 09:55 PM by Debbie Songster
