The average reader spends less than 30 seconds on a single page if nothing pulls her forth. But why? We do say content is king, but then, why does content on most blogs and sites doesn't reek of any cardinal royalty? Here's why people barely read through anything on most websites or blogs:
  • Different worms, Same Can: Titles can be a great hook to grab readers' attention, but if there isn't any information that the reader can walk away from and say " aha, I didn't know that", the party isn't going to last long.
  • Don't sound like the legal docs: Some of the websites, newsletters and brochures read as if they were court affidavits. Tell me, when was the last time you enjoyed reading that? The web surfer demands conversation. The writing must be informal, reek of a personality and be enjoyable enough.
  • Writing for the Search engines: This is the big mistake most affiliate marketers and Internet marketers do when they approach the " content" side of their business. Search engines are an incredible source of traffic and I am not about to contest that, but it isn't going to be a rock of gibraltar. Your website is here today; gone tomorrow. Search engines are not going to buy your products and they don't need "convincing". Readers do. Write for them and see what difference you'd make.

These are good pointers to understand the audience. It is really important to catch the readers' attention and this can be done by understanding what they expect. However, when it comes to the style of writing it depends on the subject, audience, forum, etc.

    True, I agree.

The style definitely has to match the forum, audience and the reader's expectations.
