When most people decide they want a web site, they go first to a web designer.
Big Mistake
---------------
There are 3 DIFFERENT people you need to work with to have successful web site.
1. Internet Marketer – this person works with you to determine your target audience, develops the plan on what content you need to attract your target audience and what marketing campaigns campaigns you will run to reach them. This is the FIRST person you need.
2. Copy Writer – a professional copywriter writes the words you need to persuade, engage and seduce visitors to your web site to interact more an buy your products. This is the SECOND person you need and they will write to the target audience you and your Internet marketer decided to focus on.
3. Web Designer – this person creates a professional high impact graphic web site to appeal to the target audience and to showcase the copy written by the copy writer.
All of these are highly specialized fields and it would be very unlikely to find one person to do all three. I describe it as similar to a medical doctor. A heart surgeon is a highly skilled and trained medical professional but you wouldn’t ask them to do brain surgery.
There are years of study needed to master both – both are needed and are NOT interchangeable.
Similarly, going to a web designer and expecting them to also do web copy and Internet marketing sets your web site up to fail. It would be a very rare person that is world class in web design, copy writing AND Internet marketing. I personally don’t know of anyone like this.
What about agencies?
Agencies and larger design companies may have designers, copywriters and Internet marketers on staff.
Before hiring them, make sure you review the portfolio of the people who will actually be working on your project, not just the general portfolio of the agency. Otherwise the writer, designer or creator of the marketing campaign you admired may not the one working on your project.
If you like their design, but not their copywriting or Internet marketing campaigns, you can use the agency only for design and hire your other experts elsewhere.

My expertise is as an Internet marketer. When I do web sites for clients, I work with talented freelancers who do the design and copywriting work. I do some copywriting for myself and coach my clients on how to write better for themselves, but I don’t hire myself out as a copywriter.
