Free Vs Paid for Traffic

What is best free or paid for traffic?
I interviewed a number of people and had 100s of responses to questionnaires I sent out. The results - the short answer is both.It is a good idea to have a free method and a paid for method running at the same time. One if slow and steady and the other is fast and explosive. (If done right of course)
Most people like a good tried and tested paid for traffic technique. One that's fast and that you know will work for your offer. You still need to test it. Even a single word in the title a graphic or the colours you use could have a massive effect on your results. Here are the top 3 paid for traffic sources, based on the responses I received:
1. Facebook advertising
2. Solo ads
3. Media buying
These are not my top 3. I would chose
1. Twitter PPC
2. YouTube Advertising
3. Direct Mail
Without doubt Facebook came out on top in the responses I gathered.
Top Free traffic sources:
1. YouTube
2. Forums
3. Facebook
Again I would chose a slightly different top 3 free traffic sources:
1. Video Marketing (not necessarily YouTube)
2. Affiliate Marketing
3. Facebook
Which ever are your top 3 free and paid for traffic techniques, you need to know your return on investment. I spoke to one of my clients today they wanted some advice on how to promote a new product. I asked what they had tried and what results they were getting and she didn't know.
This reminds me of a famous quote from John Wanamaker "Half of my advertising works really well. I just dont know which half." If you don't measure, tweak and test, you will never know what to put more money into and what to pull back from. You results will never improve.
This goes for free advertising as well. After all even though it doesn't cost money, it does cost in time. So you still want to see what effort is getting the best results.
What ever your chosen traffic methods, ensure you get the best possible return on your investment.
