Most people familiar with Internet marketing have heard the term "the money is in the list." It's true that most successful marketers sell more products to the people on their email lists than they do any other way. That may cause you to wonder how to build a list. And, as you shall see, it is also important to keep your subscribers on your list. Here are a few good suggestions that will help you accomplish both of those objectives.

First off, you should always strive to build each list in a specific niche. Let's say you have a website about weight loss. It is usually best to drill down into a category that is that broad. With that in mind, you decide to target women. That may still be too broad, so you decide to take it even a step further and target women who want to lose weight for an upcoming big event --- say their wedding.

This type of niche works much better because you will face less competition on the web. As a result you are more likely to get better rankings with the search engines for your keyword phrases. This, in turn, will drive free traffic to your website.

Once people reach your site, however, they must find it informative. Don't expect to fill a website with PLR articles and be successful. The information on your website should be both informative and entertaining. By now you might be wondering: "What has this to do with building a list?" Plenty!

The simple fact is no one will want to subscribe to your email list unless they first like what you have to say. So the number one rule of thumb is make your website informative and entertaining. You can do this by writing a lot of first person articles that are humorous and human. Tell personal stories that illustrate the points you are trying to make.

Now that people are visiting your site, you are ready to ask people to join your list. There are several good ways to do this.

The first way is to give them a gift for joining. You may purchase a PLR book your on subject, then rewrite it in your own words. Spend $5 or $10 over at Fiverr and get a book cover designed.

Next step is to prepare a few compelling sentences about the book. Let your readers know you wrote the book and that it is free for joining your email list. This is a tried and true method.

Another way to get people to join your list is to post informative quizzes on your website. You may ask five questions about methods to lose weight quickly. Then you can tell your readers that the answers will be included each week in your newsletter which they will receive when they join your mailing list.

Be sure to give people reasons why they should join your list. Tell them that you will be sending special bulletins, newsletters, tips of the week, or other special information that is available only to subscribers.

Learning how to build a list is not enough, however. You must also keep your subscribers once they join your list. How do you do this?

Make your emails entertaining and informative. If readers know they will be entertained when they open your email they will be looking forward to the next one. Don't load your mail with pushy sales pitches --- it will make your readers hit the "unsubscribe" button faster than anything else.
