And I don’t mean taking your shoes off before walking on the freshly clean carpet.
One organization out there makes it easy for businesses, organizations, and individuals to create a world fueled by clean energy while offsetting their carbon footprints.
Carbonfund.org foundation, a non-profit organization based in Maryland, allows the masses to purchase carbon credits for activities such as living, commuting, and shipping. When someone opts to help make the world a little “greener” through the Carbonfund, they are given a choice on how their credits are spent.

The Options

Renewable energy is supported by Carbonfund through funding. The organization has been backing seven renewable energy projects across the globe, the majority of which are located in the United States. Projects range from harnessing the wind and the sun for power to tapping landfills and dairy farms for energy.
Power from dairy farms you may ask. In the childish way to put it, they collect cow patties and turn it into energy. To get more technical, manure is collected from ten California dairy farms and the methane is extracted to produce clean energy. And this project helps the Earth two fold. Collecting the manure also preserves groundwater.
Energy efficiency is achieved by the Carbonfund supporting two projects. One is the nation-wide Truck Stop Electrification project which aims to provide electric hookups to truckers when they take a break at a truck stop. Normally truckers idle their rigs to power the heater and air conditioner and to power on-board appliances when they take a break from the road. This project cuts back on truck emissions.
The other project is the buying carbon credits from corporate carbon credit trading house, the Chicago Climate Exchange. Instead of retiring the credits, some companies sell them off to polluting non-compliant companies. Carbonfund buys them and retires them.
Reforestation is a key part in the fight against global warming. By using carbon credits in this option, you’re supporting the replanting for trees and forest preservation at four locations in the world. Trees suck carbon out the atmosphere, creating clean air.
But there’s more! Reforestation expands wildlife habitats, protects biodiversity, and improves local environmental quality. Forest preservation also creates jobs.

Do it

eCommerce merchants can easily help offset their carbon footprint by checking out the shipping page on the site. You can put in to a calculator how you ship (truck/air), the number of packages shipped per year, their average weight, and average distance they travel and you’ll see what your carbon footprint is. When credits are purchased businesses receive a host of recognition including their name on carbonfund.org, a news release, a CarbonFree webpage, and CarbonFree logos to be used on marketing and packaging materials. However, a minimum donation of $350 is needed to be called a CarbonFree partner.
