Greater Personal Achievement May Still Be Possible in 2013

Well, here we are, three weeks into the New Year. Many of us started the year with high hopes and idealistic expectations of pursuing greater personal achievement than we experienced last year.

Do you still feel that initial excitement and enthusiasm, or has it started to wear off?

The way it usually works for me is I get pumped up with the prospect of a new year and new beginnings, the opportunity to make some changes, set some new goals, get myself on a more productive track towards higher achievement...

...and then... reality begins to set in. I start to realize that, although my expectations are high and my intentions are good, nothing magical has changed with the simple flipping of the calendar page. I still have the same challenges and responsibilities, the same obstacles and limitations.

I haven’t suddenly gained more time or more talent or more wisdom. I am still the same old me in the same old circumstances, striving to find a way to break free and answer a higher calling.

What is a person to do?

Well, the first thing to do is to go back to the beginning of the year and examine those New Year’s dreams and goals we so enthusiastically jumped on.

Are they realistic? Are they achievable?

Next, we need to examine our plan for achieving them. Do we even HAVE a plan? We need to set some specific action steps and some specific timelines. That’s what separates dreams from goals.

We then need to determine how to fit those action steps into our current busy schedule. If our new goals have a higher priority than some of our existing projects, then it is time to re-evaluate those projects to see what we need to let go of to make room for our new goals.

Greater personal achievement typically means making changes to the way we do things and even to the way we think about things. When our progress seems to slow or stop, that is usually a good sign that some drastic changes are necessary in both our thoughts and our actions. If we are honest with ourselves, we might realize that some serious course corrections are in order.

Personal introspection can be a tough thing, but the benefits of reinventing one’s self can be significant. If we are serious about personal success and achievement, we will make it a priority to evaluate our present circumstances and then make adjustments to our perspective and our plans where necessary and beneficial.

If your New Year’s enthusiasm is wearing down under the strain of your present reality, then take a break to re-examine your goals and develop a new plan of action that may require the shelving of unproductive projects or activities. It’s all about reinvention and a commitment to greater personal achievement.
