If you get a chance to talk with conversion experts, there are some core principles that everyone agrees on... below is an article I found talking about some of these principles:

The Importance of Focusing on Squeeze Pages with High Conversions

A high converting squeeze page can make a world of difference to the success of an online business. A well designed squeeze page with good conversion rates can help an online business to build a list of interested visitors and therefore potential clients for whatever product or service they have for sale.

The purpose of a squeeze page is to persuade, cajole and entice visitors to a website to give away their most valuable possession - their email address. Once a business has the email address they will be able to include them in their future email marketing campaigns and hopefully profit from this interest.
But why should any visitor part with their email address? This is a very good question and one which needs to be looked at seriously. There is no point in asking a visitor to give their email data unless they perceive that you need it for something. There is no need to give out an email address to watch an online video because most people will realize that it is simply not necessary before going somewhere like YouTube and finding the video in an alternative location.

A visitor is much more likely to give an email address so that they can receive an E-book or an E-mailed training course. Email courses are a terrific idea for a number of reasons:

* They can be sent out in small chunks which are easy for the client to read, understand and implement
* Regular emails can help to build a relationship between the business and the client
* Email courses can be used for a wide variety of topics

Any marketing department worth its salt really does need to focus on producing a great squeeze page with a high conversion rate - it's the most efficient way for a business to grow.
