Many times, people need to send cold e-mails to others they do not know and most of these cold e-mails either end up in the spam box or simply go unread for a long period of time. Everybody is busy and they need to have something to open that e-mails. In such cases, experts recommend creating a subject line that communicates the value the recipient is going to get from opening it. For instance, you may include a discount for the product or service in the subject line. Similarly, if you are offering a speaking opportunity, you should make it specific in the subject line and offer them the benefits in the subject line itself.

One of the biggest advantages of various e-mail automation tools available today is that it allows personalization with the click of a button. Still, there are a lot of people who choose not to use it even though it has been shown to have great impact.

Personalization ensures that the e-mail interests the recipient and they are more likely to open that e-mail. For instance, you may write, ‘increase traffic by 40% within two months’ or something similar. This will grab their attention and they are more likely to read the e-mail.

You need to be respectful of the time of the recipient. Therefore, you should never write a subject line where the thought is in the body of the e-mail. This forces the recipient to open the e-mail and they may not find it helpful. In such cases, you may call them or meet them in person.

Always reread the subject line and the body of the e-mail before you press that send button. A lot of people have made the mistake of sending the wrong e-mail to the wrong person. It is easy to personalize mail for each recipient and nobody likes to receive an e-mail with subject line comes containing the name of their competitor or someone else. The best way to avoid such goof ups is to reread that subject line before you hit that send button.

Since text does not give the tone of an e-mail message, some etiquette has been developed by the online community over the years. For instance, everything in all caps is the equivalent of yelling. Experts recommend using colons and dashes and avoid using special characters in the subject line.
