Affiliate marketing is a great way of building a full time income generating business online. In this business model, an affiliate is paid commissions for generating a sale or lead for another marketer's product. However, due to the fact there are tons of affiliates out there, it can be quite a competitive business. Thus, upping your game and cutting out some of the most common mistakes is vital if you want generate a good income long term. Here are the top 13 marketing mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Not understanding the math behind success. Most affiliates concentrate on looking for cheap traffic as a way for success. This can be a successful methodology if you are an expert in search engine optimization (SEO). However, everyone is looking for cheap traffic. Generally, the sources that convert the best will also be the most expensive. That is fine. Affiliates should concentrate more on upping their revenue per lead or customer than on pinching pennies on traffic. The goal should be to have the highest per lead value of anyone. Then you can profitably outbid most affiliates on the major pay per click platforms.

2. Not building an email list. This often follows from the first mistake. The best way to increase the long term value of your traffic is to convert as many visitors as possible into email subscribers. Otherwise, once you have lost that visitor you have spent so much money to acquire, they are gone for good. On the other hand, when you can market to the same people over and over again, you are building a solid passive income. At the same time, when you look at the value of a lead over the course of a year, you will find you can spend a lot more to acquire that lead and still make a nice profit.
