What I'm about to attempt might one day be hailed as a brave attempt to smash windmills with a tightly rolled newspaper. Or it may be perceived as yet another silly act of futility.

For my next magic trick, I'll attempt to persuade you that keyword research is, in fact, more fun than watching paint dry.

Now. There is no doubt that everybody loves a good paint drying party. Studies indicate that watching paint dry is quickly emerging as the worlds number one pastime. How can keyword research compete with that?

There are those, evil tongues, who claim that keyword research is even less fun than watching grass grow. In the immortal words of aunt Petunia's blue-eyed nephew I can only say "It's clobbering Time!"

I too once hated keyword research as an activity. It seemed pointless spending hours with Excel, the Google keyword tool and a host of other widgets, gizmos and gadgets.

Then it dawned on me!

I had found the one activity where I didn't have to actively find and excuse to spend hours using Excel.

This may seem odd, why would anyone need an excuse to use Excel?

I'm a huge sportsfan. I live in Europe where football (or as yanks like to call it: soccer) is by far the most popular sport. It is not as easily converted into statistics as many American games such as baseball. However, during the 90s Football(soccer) management games emerged. It was during this time I was finally able to lead my beloved Liverpool Football Club to the championships it so deserved, if I hadn't been so exceptionally underwhelmingly enabled to play these games. Many of these management games are in fact stats driven, and for years those stats where my excuse to use Excel. Little did I know the impact this would have on my life.

Spreadsheets are great for calculating and analysing data (obviously) and with the aid of Excel I was able to turn my underwhelming ability into mediocrity. I, quite frankly, could not believe what a massive step this was for mankind! I was now able to keep whatever football(soccer) club I managed alive for at least 2 seasons!

What's all this non-sense got to do with keyword research you ask?

Not much, but don't you think it's a clever anecdote about the importance of Excel?

Every magic trick needs a good distraction to ensure the audience doens't notice how the magician chea...err...I mean performs his magic. At this point you all realize that keyword research is, in fact, a lot more fun than watching paint dry!

No?

***insert sound of magician scratching head***

Ok. Let's be honest, and serious, for just a moment here.

Lots of people hate keyword research. They find it boring, useless and futile.

It is a lot of hours spent using a lot of, let's face it, rather boring tools to possibly get a bit of traffic to your website.

Finding keywords for SEO is a chore, but in terms of SEO it is and will remain integral to success. I know there are a lot of really advanced systems and methods out there, but do you really need them? Really?

I don't use them and I do Ok. Maybe that's because SEO is rarely the main focus of what I do. It's an afterthought, but it is there!

I'm not going to rely on just the epicness of my writing for traffic. Different people have different tastes and there is absolutely no guarantee people will come back.

So, what is my system? And after reading this load of .... you really deserve to get something!

It's really simple. In the Google keyword tool I look for keywords with "low competition" only! And then I sprinkle those across the entirety of my content.

Note: Don't ever force a keyword if it doesn't fit with your content!

I check the number of competing sites and if that number is below 500 and the keyword has a decent amount of searches I'm more than willing to give it a shot.

In this blog post there will be a fair number of those keywords here and there!

The above is my "quick and dirty" approach to keyword research. When I want to go a little more in depth and find a bunch of keywords I can use I will use my Keyword Prowler system.

It is really simple. It's simply because I realize not everybody loves Excel as much as I do! For those who do (there ought to be a club!) you might find the simplicity disheartening. What you need to do is go and find more keywords using the keyword prowler system.

So, if you think you have a website that could use some love from Google go check out Keyword Prowler.
