Establishing website subject (theme) requires having a basic understanding in the use of Meta tags. Meta data (sometime referred to as Meta elements) are the HTML attributes (descriptions) describing web page structure.
Examples of what Meta data is used onsite for;
1. Website title
2. Website description
3. Page descriptions
4. Content categories
5. Anchor text
6. Alt tags (used for hosted images)
7. Multimedia assets
8. Document uploads
These elements are a great way to feed indexing bots sometimes called algorithms, information to assure proper indexing of content. Meta tags aren’t ‘the magic key’ to Seo supremacy but are a small piece in a larger puzzle you must put together for maximum effectiveness. There are always irrelevant discussions and without verifiable supporting data, online arguments and debates concerning which areas of meta-data are more important than others. However, not implementing an effective meta strategy will assure your website remains (or is cast) into search engine oblivion!
What happens when webmasters either aren’t informed enough or simply leave Meta data out? Not only is this not advisable, something much worse will, without doubt, occur – absent Meta tags, search algorithms will define your content any way they choose! Let me be clear; bots are intelligent and over the years have become world changing technology however, they aren’t ‘mind readers’ and if you fail to communicate (through keyword driven meta data) what is on your mind, it is a sure bet they will determine what THEY BELIEVE your website theme is and index accordingly.
The point; feed descriptive Meta data to search engines because the alternative, whatever it is, probably won’t work in a way that benefits brand messaging.
