Using Twitter for Business has become quite challenging as the social media website reaches ‘maximum marketing capacity’. This doesn’t mean, however, Twitter doesn’t still have value for promoting your business. Here at SBC TV, we started, in earnest, using Twitter to market our products and services in 2009. Back then, there was still an abundant amount of keyword specific real estate (profiles) available. For the savvy marketer, this meant interjecting sales messaging into Twitter conversations was quite simple.

As is usually true, the most popular social media websites quickly become over-crowded and Twitter is no exception. What makes Twitter even more attractive is its low maintenance set-up and management. With its’ recent IPO (initial public offering) of stock, Twitter has been exposed as not having a solid business model and a future which lacks direction.

Nevertheless; entrepreneurs and small businesses exist because we’ve learned to exploit marketplace chaos and there are very few platforms as chaotic as Twitter! In this article, we’ll offer best practices for Twitter marketing but more importantly, attempt to give a devastatingly effective plan far beyond the ‘tweet’. So much focus is put on tweeting and other onsite activities that most either don’t know or fail to realize Twitter’s true promotion value – search engine indexing.

As we teach in our Social Media Marketing course, effective strategy hinges on the marketer’s ability to do five things on Twitter;
  1. Choose effective keywords when setting up Twitter profiles
  2. Creating multiple keyword centric profiles
  3. Back linking, from those profiles, to product and services
  4. Monitoring results using website tracking software
  5. Ongoing testing, tweaking and profile enhancements
Any Internet based marketing effort begins with effective keyword selection. Whether domain names, written content, video promos, social media websites, paid search advertising or other, keywords identify search need as well as geo-targets those most likely to spend money with your company. When future customers search social media websites, their habits aren’t much different than when searching Google, Yahoo or Bing! Whether trying to locate a person, business, product or general information, it begins with keyword phrases. Yes; your online presence, being a name, is a keyword designation. Organizations that focus on keyword deployment strategies are they who will rise to the top.

We’ve shouted from the rooftops, unto nausea, the need to multiply keyword centric content regardless of marketing platform used. Make no mistake and coming from a U.S. Marine; online marketing is a kind of war which any hoping to earn profits must come to with overwhelming force. That force is taking one piece of content and duplicating it across as many websites as possible. To date, we have 700 or so videos on Youtube. That number, although seeming large, is hardly so. We’ve used 70 videos and stretched them out across ten different, keyword centric

Youtube channels. Whether articles, videos, business presentation or other; share each piece of content as often as possible. Sure, some would call this SPAMMING but to date, with only several exceptions, social media websites we host content with view it much differently. Should we (or you) care about what competitors think or those who assist brand building efforts?

Twitter has been very fruitful with all of our business marketing efforts and moreover, multiplying content has helped us totally overwhelm much less capable competitors. Roughly, we have about 100 keyword centric profiles on Twitter, each focusing on different market segments. Let’s face it; there is ‘a lot of noise’ on Twitter and should you choose to enter the fray, your voice (messaging) must rise above the ‘riff raff’.

Back linking and its value has changed much over the years. There was a time when landing a back link, pretty much any back link, added value to a business website’s authority. Those days are long gone and with the Google Panda and Penguin updates a few years ago, back links are most valuable when earned by readers sharing your content with others. This tells search indexing bots, responsible for determining content authority and ranking it appropriately on search engines, your content is viewed as both valuable and authoritative. As Twitter is concerned, your focus should be getting others to click on shared links and more importantly, encouraging them to share it with others; often known as re-tweeting.

Never forget that placing backlinks is good but calling readers to action is better! Never assume just because you place a link on Twitter, or any other website for that matter, people will click without being told to.
Although much can be said about social media website tracking software to monitor your Twitter marketing efforts, we won’t go into a long dissertation on the subject. What is most important is implementing tracking protocols and tweaking results according to the information software provides. Of these, Google Analytics is best known.

Let’s face facts; every piece of content you create isn’t going to perform well! We’ve been at it for more than 14 years and still suffer ‘marketing flops’. For instance and being SEO (search engine optimization) experts, our goal is to, at minimum, place 50% of all content created on page #1 of search. However and as of yet, this goal hasn’t been achieved. Why? It certainly isn’t from lack of effort! We (nor you) control how search bots will index content.

Your #1 priority should be making it as attractive as possible and this begins (and ends) with effective keywords. Each time we set up a Twitter business profile, our goal is twofold; rank well in onsite search as well as offsite (search engines). This means, for onsite rankings, when Twitter users type in certain keywords, our message (profile) should rank in the top 3 of all results and thus receive the maximum number of views.

As it concerns offsite search, anything less than a top 2 ranking, regardless of keyword focus, is totally unacceptable! Collectively, focusing on these two placements will drive the maximum amount of traffic and enhance sales funnel participation by customers but first, write a quick Internet marketing plan and make sure to include Twitter!
