There's been a lot of debate over this subject some of it quite heated. Do colors help people to decide to buy a particular product? What it comes down to simple is the laws of attraction. What colors create which moods. In fact some large corporations spend millions of dollars on studying this very subject in order to increase sales and corner the market. Fast food restaurants like McDonald's use bright colors like reds and oranges. What this does is encourage the diners to eat quickly and then leave. This is exactly what they want.

Lets have a look at whats colors represent moods in the USA:

Red......excitement, strength, sex, passion, speed, danger.


Blue.....(most popular) trust, reliability, belonging, coolness.


Yellow...warmth, sunshine, cheer, happiness.


Orange...playfulness, warmth, vibrant.


Green....nature, fresh, cool, growth, abundance.


Purple...royal, spirituality, dignity.


Pink.....soft, sweet, nurture, security.


White....pure, virginal, clean, youthful, mild.


Black....sophistication, elegant, seductive, mystery, sexual.


Gold.....prestige, expensive, elite.


Silver...prestige, cold, scientific.


With these colors in mind think of large corporations in the United States and see if they use these colors to entice customer buying. In fact a great comparison is the Ferrari. Red and Black are two primary colors used by this company. Looking at the above chart you can see the reasoning behind this.


While the above colors are used to represent a large number of similar moods within the general population it doesn't hold true for every country.


*Different cultures have different attitudes and preferences thus; they will have another color reaction. In China, "white" symbolizes death and in Brazil, it is the color purple. People from warm countries respond favorably to warm colors; people from colder climates prefer the cooler colors.


What this ultimately means is using neutral colors within sales websites. As you would have seen for alot of landing pages the common colors used to push sales is Red with a Yellow back ground. What this promotes is excitement but also warmth. I've also seen alot of landing pages using the color blue as the background color outside the table which promotes trust and reliability.


With this in mind, keep your target audience at the forefront when creating your website. This way you'll be able to use the colors which will help promote your products more effectively and ultimately lead to more sales.

    Thanks for that, you've brought up a good subject.

    I personally find that a deep red with soft gradients works wonders. It works well in the tattoo niche that I'm in!
