Naturally, this blog is going to be about how to make money online. What else would I be writing about here? There's no plan or purpose though. Just a place to share some insights every now and then when I've got more to say than I can fit in a forum post.

I've recently taken on a new blog in the make money online niche and I wanted to post to quickly show that even the most basic SEO can get you ranking on Google pretty fast. I bought it for a few reasons. It was making about $100 per month in affiliate sales and had about 2000 uniques per month, so it wasn't a big rain maker, but the potential was there.

One of the biggest things I was looking for and the reason I bought this blog was the fact that it had a little page rank (2), unique content and - and this is one of the big ANDs in my opinion when looking at a potential website purchase - it wasn't optimized for the search engines for the main keyword in the URL!

The URL contains the keyword phrase 'make money online' and this combined with the fact that the first owner posted to it very regularly for over 12 months is one of the reasons it ranks in the top 100 for a keyword with 185,000,000 sites. So you can see the value of a keyword rich domain...

The thing is that as I read through the posts it was obvious that the original owner wasn't targeting search engine traffic (whether by design of default). He seemed to be more after social traffic. I mean, it had a great theme and looked nice with lots of pictures, a video and a lot of flashing banner ads for internet marketing products in the sidebars. But the posts hardly mentioned the words 'make money online' and there was no internal linking going on at all. As a result, with only two weeks working on it part-time (probably 10 hours total), posting only 5 new posts and editing only a handful of older posts, I've risen from 420 in Google to 82 in the last 7 days. Not bad for a start and I haven't even been backlinking. When I do I'll have the best SEO methods in place and really get going.

In fact I've even started to get traffic from the main keyword 'make money online' now that I'm in the top 100 (not that I can really understand how anyone gets to page 9 before chosing a site to read, but I'll take it).

My goal is to have the site in the top 20 by the end of the year and I expect by then I'll probably have about 10,000 uniques per month (not all from 'make money online' of course) and about $500 per month in revenue. Then I'll sell it. It isn't a very profitable niche to be honest and I was really buying it to flip because I knew I could easily increase the traffic and revenue. In fact I've changed the whole look of the site to optimize it for Adsense primarily, but I I'll add a couple of banner placements for some MMO affiliate products and I'll probably get some private advertising space sold when the traffic increases, so getting $500 per month won't be hard. I've even started getting $2.50 clicks for the Adsense now that it's optimized a bit more. I mean, in the beginning when I put Adsense up it was displaying BMW ads on a lot of posts because the posts didn't mention the main keywords!!

I just can't stress enough how important it is to use your keywords on your site - put them in the domain name, the title, the description, h1, h2, h3 tags, in your post titles, in the first and last paragraphs of the post, in bold and in anchor text linking back to the home page. Mix it around between posts of course, but make the main keyword a big part of everything you do on the site. This is especially important for Adsense because you get the highest revenue for your clicks when your site is fully optimized.

And as for anchor text, you've just got to get anchor text backlinks. Full stop. That's the next stage of my optimization strategy - about 5-10,000 backlinks over the next 6 months for the main keyword (and for some long tail keywords to get some of the posts into #1 spots) depending on how much time I put into it.

So the moral of the story? If you want to make money online you have to get traffic and there is a lot of traffic in the SERPs even for competitive keywords with a little SEO knowledge and effort.

By the way, if you are interested in doing any link exchanges or blogroll exchanges and you have a make money online site (and can give me anchor text with the term 'make money online' - I'm happy to give you whatever anchor text you want), regardless of whether you've got PR - PM me.
