Who amongst us have never heard of Oprah Winfrey? We all have. Her start in life was unremarkable and so too were her first few years. Her story is quite common.

She was born out of wedlock to a mother who herself was just a girl. She grew up poor and during her childhood experienced sexual abuse which later on in her early teen years led her to act out. Seeing that her daughter was becoming too difficult to handle, Winfrey’s mother sent her to live with her biological father.

From this point on what was once common began to change. Later, it would become extraordinary.

Oprah always had a passion for books and a Love for speaking. Her role model was Barbara Walters and the young Oprah longed to be like her-a goal some back then, would have said was unrealistic for an African American child.

Her passion for speaking led her at 19 and while still in high school to a job in local radio. In In 1983, Winfrey went to Chicago to host WLS-TV's lowly-rated half-hour morning show. It soon went from last to first place besting Phil Donahue’s the then reining talk show king.

Some would say Oprah was 'lucky'. Time however shows Oprah made her luck by her work ethic and her decisions. A classic example of making and standing by her decisions is the unpopular one she made regarding not having kids. Oprah determined early on that being a mother was too important a task to lollygag. She knew it deserved 100 percent commitment. And her passion in her career was too strong to be a ‘some-what’ parent.

Oprah's success transcended her talk show. She branched out into The Oprah Book Club, O magazine, Radio Show and produced several really great movies.

These stand out from the norm of mediocrity because each was touched with that special 'Oprahness'. She also gave many people their start and made them all house-hold names- Dr. Phil, Suze Orman, Iyanla Vanzant; authors Wally Lamb, I know This Much is True ; Anna Shreve, The Pilot’s Wife and many others.

Oprah has been a heart-led and purpose -led entrepreneur long before these words were coined or even popular. Her's is a story filled with many worthwhile lessons. We can use these as we construct our social media profiles and also in our day to day social media activities.

Lesson 1:

Live your truth. Make the tough decisions and stand by it. Everyone is here for a purpose find yours and even if it’s not to the liking of the 'common' thinking still do your thing.

How to Use in Your Social Media:
Know who You are. Isolate and identify who You are, what your purpose is and who You are here to help. Define that clearly and succinctly. Use this definition in your profile across ALL your social places [LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube etc.]

Lesson 2:

Have different segments but stay in the same market

How to Use in Your Social Media:
If You create various market shares in different niches ensure that the demographics and psychographics are generally the same- The people who followed the Oprah Talk Show are mostly the same who buy O magazine, sign up for the O network and listen to her on the radio. See what people in your niche are wanting and provide various products and services.

Lesson 3:

Find your essence- that thing which is indelibly 'You'

How to Use in Your Social Media:
Find that thing which is yours and which no one does quite like You and plaster it everywhere You go.
For some it’s their humor, For me it is my deep Love for others and nature and my inherent spirituality.
What is it for You? Whatever it is- it is the fulcrum upon which the Brand Called, You, stands.

Lesson 4:
We are all in this together. Do not be greedy there is room enough for all.

How to Use in Your Social Media:

Help others by sharing their posts. Work with others by collaborating on similar ideas. Do joint- venture with others toward common goals. Play nicely with others. If You cannot say good do not go out or your way to say bad. Send good vibes to others. In a universe such as ours what we do to others we do to ourselves.
