For decades, network marketing has been touted as the way to work for yourself and enjoy building a business with people that you LIKE. If this is the case then why are the systems that have been historically used to build these businesses better at encouraging the people you like to avoid you?
The reality is that people that become successful in network marketing do so in two basic ways. Either, they are already wealthy and therefore well connected to people who have money and are equally well connected. Or, they do it the right way which is by creating a network of like-minded people with relationships built on mutual trust and respect and don't necessarily focus on the particular business they are trying to build. In my opinion, the BIGGEST mistake a network marketer can make is to focus too much on the marketing to the neglect of the actual network.
Initially, the concept was meant to capitalize on the relationships that you already have and create a business based upon that foundation. Unfortunately however, since we're human, greed took over and the actual human element of the system began to be treated as an after thought.
FACT: We know that network marketing works. For millennia, it's been used to disseminate information with great success. Perhaps one of the greatest network marketers of all time was Jesus Christ. His message/product is life changing. His upline provides tremendous support, and He is still providing fantastic mentoring and training to His downline through infinite levels. As far as compensation plans go, His is second to none! No, you're not getting a check… ever. You have to think of it more as a savings plan, which is admittedly difficult for some and has, for centuries, caused there to be quite a bit of upheaval and discontent from within the organization. But, when those in his downline revisit his system and re-read his terms and conditions, they invariably find that His way is and will always be the best way.
However, in spite of all of this, His success is entirely predicated on WHO HE IS. Jesus made claims about truth, and then lived a lifestyle that was not only evidence of the power of His product but that was attractive to others. In fact, the message that's found in the Bible, contrary to what you may have been led to believe by the media propaganda machine, is an account of what Jesus DID, not a long list of things that He avoided and forbade. It's very difficult to argue with His results. Throughout history, his organization has numbered in the tens of billions and some 2,000 years later, His downline is still growing, one person at a time.
FACT: The number one reason most people choose to join a network marketing organization is the quality of the person who exposed them to the opportunity. In fact, it ironically works much in the same way direct marketing does in that our purchasing habits are largely influenced by the perception that we have of the company manufacturing the product. Otherwise, name brands would no longer exist AND boycotts wouldn't work… Just ask the Ford Motor Company about what happened to them a few years ago.
Think about buying a new car. Having sold cars for a couple of years right after college, I can attest to the fact that while price is a factor when a customer is deciding upon which car to buy and from where to purchase it, the dealership and experience they have with the sales staff, specifically the sales person is ultimately what determines their final choice. Because of mass production, most of the time the customer can find exactly what they want at a number of dealerships so all things being equal, it boils down to the human experience.
In an industry where success is almost entirely dependent upon hand shakes, word of mouth advertising, and face to face meetings (or in the case of the Internet, chat room time), this human experience is even more vital. If a prospect isn't comfortable with the person who is introducing them to the system, they'll likely reject it. In fact, most people consider the merits of the company last when choosing a network marketing organization to become affiliated with. The human factor is, across the board, the most important thing.
FACT: The vast majority of people who aren't looking to go into some type of home-based business WILL NOT be interested in joining your organization. THIS INCLUDES FAMILY AND FRIENDS!!! So why are we constantly being told to, "make a list of people who are in our warm market." Not only that, when has taking advantage of the people closest to us ever been a good idea. Let's face it, at least for most of us, when our mom has signed up, it's only been because she was, "so darn proud of us," or even worse, she felt sorry for us and wanted to see us succeed. REALITY CHECK: Unless your momma is actively looking for a network marketing opportunity, she's not really in your warm market, neither is anyone else on your so-called "warm list."
Reach out to people with similar interests that you meet through social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, and take the time to do what Jesus did and really get to know them. Develop a relationship with them by learning about their past, present, and future hopes. Find out about their family and beliefs and passions. The people in your network are just that, PEOPLE, treat them the way you want to be treated, with value.
At the end of the day, you may discover that the wealth you build is much more valuable than anything that can be measured in dollars and cents...
