The Best Tool for Keyword Research

There are two different times when keyword research is done.
First, before entering a new niche.
Second, after entering a niche and needing to laser focus your pages to get more traffic and conversions.
Before Entering a Niche
There are two tools I use to evaluate keywords to target before entering a niche.
The first it the Google keyword tool. Most marketers start and stop with the Google keyword tool and miss out on a lot of keywords as a result.
For whatever reason, the tool will omit a lot of popular keywords and absolutely not disclose a lot of long tail searches. It is free, which is good, but I guarantee you a lot of traffic is missed if you exclusively use this tool to pick your keywords.
The other tool I use is called KSP. This is a paid tool that does a much more thorough job of finding keyword phrases that people actually use.
After Entering a Niche
If you really want to make money then you need to keep doing keyword research after first creating your website.
The best tool I have found for fine tuning your keywords is simply your own website analytics.
Within the cpanel for my web host is an option called AWstats. This program will show you, month by month and year by year, what keywords are being searched for to find your website.
I also use a free program called Piwik. This is a Google Analytics alternative and it shines at showing traffic trends, traffic sources, and what people are searching for.
You will be surprised at what keywords your website is being found for. Also, pay attention what keywords are not being listed and thus what keywords you are not ranking for.
This is a goldmine of information at your fingertips you can use to create additional pages or to fine tune existing pages to get more traffic for particular search phrases people are actually using.

Do you have any information concerning as to how "Keyword Elite" compares to the KSP and the Google keyword tool in terms of displaying real keywords?Posted 11th February 2013 at 10:10 AM by cash365
- I have not used Keyword Elite so I do not know how it compares to other products.
In a recent niche where I know from experience a ton of keywords are searched on, KSP returned 456 results. The Google keyword tool returned 31.
If you were creating a site with a page devoted to each phrase, most marketers would have a 31 page site. I would have a 456 page site.
Perhaps even more important is that Google does not disclose many long tail keywords. Although individually their traffic counts may be low, in the aggregate the volume is significant and these are commonly the buying keywords.
