#1 Skill Every WordPress User Needs to Learn
Posted 26th January 2015 at 07:43 AM by kindsvater
Wordpress is an easy to use content management system. You do it all online. Install it, add posts and pages, use plugins, and so on.
Easy smeasy.
Until you need to do something outside of Wordpress. Such as modifying a .htaccess file. Editing any file. Uploading a file to your website outside of Wordpress.
Suddenly, many Wordpress users panic.
This really is an important skill to learn. And not difficult. Or, you can fork out money every time you need someone to do these basic tasks for you.
This is what I want you to do if you fall into this category.
1. Create a .txt file on your computer. You can put anything in the file. I suggest simply typing your name.
You can use Notepad, Wordpad, Word, or a hundred other programs to create a file.
2. Figure out how to upload (copy) this file from your computer to your website. Example: so you have yourdomain.com/test.txt
One common program to do this is called Filezilla, available here. It is called an "FTP" program, short for file transfer protocol.
Filezilla works a lot like Windows Explorer. Explorer shows your directories and files on your computer.
Your website is also just directories and files on a computer, but the computer is 'online' and connected to the web.
With Filezilla you can see the files on your computer on the left side of the screen, and the files on your website on the right side of the screen.
Simply double click files to move them back and forth between your computer and your website.
There is a ton of information online on how to do these tasks. Plenty of videos on YouTube exist showing you how to do it.
Trust me: Learning to edit a file on your computer and moving to your website is a skill you will want to learn if you have a website.
Example where this is important:
My Elf Links plugin is an easy to install Wordpress plugin that can boost your SEO by hiding links from Google.
You can do it all online within Wordpress.
There is also an option, for extra protection, that makes use of an external file. If you want to use this option you will need to edit the file to insert your Amazon affiliate tag and then put the file in the main directory of your website.
Once you have learned how to do this type of task, it will take maybe one minute to do.
Doing it yourself is a lot better than hiring a "techie" to do this for you.
Don't use this an excuse: I am using Wordpress so I don't need to learn any skills. If you have a website using Wordpress is just one tool, one skill to learn. There are others, such as creating graphics. Uploading a file to your website is just a skill, not a difficult one, and one which Wordpress does not fully replace.
