I get a lot of questions from people about how myself and my business partner Ryan Russo have worked together as long as we have and how we've been so successful. It's a difficult question to answer and there really is no "right" answer. Finding a good business partner is not an easy task. You need to find someone that you know you can work well with, someone who wont fold under pressure and someone you can trust under any circumstance. Business is extremely difficult and as business partners you will find yourself in trying situations that require tough decisions and level headed thinking.

Over the past year i've come up with 3 things that I believe make a good team in business. The below 3 topics attribute to a majority of our success. Ryan has been a solid individual and business partner and someone I can count on no matter what.

3 Core Values in Finding a Business Partner

1) Trust - Above all things you need to trust each other, you will be (hopefully) working with millions of dollars, and people will be counting on you to make the right decisions and lead them. Trusting each other in a business relationship is THE most important aspect of any working business relationship. The minute you stop trusting each other or doubting one another things can fall apart quickly. When looking for a business partner you need to find someone you trust with your life, someone that you know wont steal or make selfish decisions. There may be times when you have to leave the business for a week or a month and need to trust that your partner can and will step up to the plate and handle the operations and finances. I've know Ryan Russo since I was a kid and know him as a good person that has similar values to mine. When looking for a future business partner I recommend you find someone you've worked with in the past or someone you've know for years. If finding someone you've known for years is not an option then feel the potential partner out by giving them a trial of at least a year. Ensuring that you trust your business partner and that they trust you is the most important factor in finding someone to work with.

2) Work Ethic - Hard work is an understatement when it comes to talking about whats involved in running a business. I've been in and seen many business relationships where one partner doesn't carry his or her own weight and it causes tension and resentment in the working relationship. You need to know that your partner has the same or similar work ethic to you and that you can count on them to dig in deep when the going gets though. Ideally you find someone that works harder then you do and motivates you to be a better person and a harder worker. Ryan is one of the hardest working individuals i've ever come across and likely feels the same about me, we know we can count on each other to get tasks done and never leave each other hanging. If you're looking for a new business partner, put them to a test or start them out as an employee and judge their work ethic.

3) Vision and Values - Do you and your partner or potential partner have the same ideas and vision for what you believe a company should be and where you want your company to go? Establishing these things before committing to a working relationship is extremely important. If your not on the same page as your business partner and both have alternative ideas of where you company should be headed things could get thrown way of course. It's important to establish upfront what your core values are and what your vision for the company is. Having regular meetings with your partner to discuss the current state of affairs and the future direction of the company is extremely important.

I was lucky to find myself a great business partner who I trust, and have the same work ethic and vision as. I've had other partners in the past who I didn't share the above values with and the relationship ended badly or the company went no where. If your questioning your business relationship or your not finding any of the above points with your current partner it might be time to reevaluate your situation.
