One of the most common rookie mistakes in online and offline business is to go after the money. You focus on profits. You focus on revenues. You focus on volume.

The problem with this is that you don’t focus on your customers. You have to understand that a business transaction is a purely voluntary transaction. And just like any voluntary transaction, both sides of the transaction must feel that there is something in it for them. They must feel that they are getting something from the deal.

Unfortunately, if you run your business in such a way that you focus primarily on what you want and what would benefit you, it’s very tempting and easy to neglect what adds value to the lives of your consumers. It’s very easy to cut corners. It’s very easy to roll out shoddy products and offer crappy services.

Not surprisingly, the consumer will bypass the stuff that you’re offering and look for someone else who can give them what they need. In other words, they are looking for somebody who would put the customers’ needs first.

If you want to generate more profits and make more money, put your needs last. Focus on the needs of the customer. Offer a superior value and you’ll never have to worry about making money again. That’s how it works.

By putting ourselves last and by putting others first, we come out ahead.
