Entitlement.

That's the word I want to discuss today. I'm not shying away from it, I'm meeting it head on with a vengeance and with responsibility.

It's clear that today's world is a much different one. For lack of a better term, it seems like we as a human race just can't get our $h!& together! Wars, poverty, depression, political nonsense...we're all over the place. No one wants to own up and take charge or responsibility for what's going on. In government, it's more of the same...Democrat or Republican, doesn't matter because EVERYONE is self-serving. It's crazy! But I'm not here to solve the world's problems, merely I'm here to step back and analyze what could be considered a problem in our industry and evaluate how best to address it.

Entitlement, there's that word again...what does it mean? A majority (I don't want to get heat here) of everyone on earth has a feeling of entitlement. Some to varying degrees but over the past few years entitlement has grown out of control. I think of it like selfishness...the feeling that I am out for myself and I deserve more than I actually do. This feeling can be healthy in certain doses. Surely it gives you drive to create a successful business or try really hard for that promotion. Where entitlement gets toxic however is when people starting feeling as though OTHER people owe them something.

That feeling breeds from ignorance, promotes intolerance and creates more problems than it solves. It's created an obnoxious species of consumers and has degraded the quality of some businesses. It's a vicious cycle and it's created a battlefield out of the marketplace...everyone always trying to one-up each other and looking for that short cut so they don't have to work hard to get what they are owed.

Some customers feel as though they own us from buying a $7 eBook. The entitlement is more rampant than ever! When we as product creators already are over delivering and providing TREMENDOUS value we are seen as cheats who are trying to scam someone for $7.

I'm not placing the blame solely on the consumers however, certain vendors have taken advantage of the consumer's desire to learn and have put out incredibly poor products to take advantage of those needs. I can see how consumers are cautious and have hardened the shell of consumption. But it's a cycle that NEEDS to be broken and fast!

I take some blame too...I feel entitled to things on a daily basis. Do I really need to spend money on some of the pointless things I buy? Absolutely not but that is part of the entitlement problem. I'm not saying don't buy things that make you happy but there are times when I literally do not need something for any reason and I feel like I have to have it, it's inexplicable and inexcusable.

I may seem like I'm coming down hard here but we have created a system in which we've diluted the water enough that it's become a "dirty" place in the eyes of some of the outsiders. We are a community of people...many of us very capable human beings. Let's not replicate the mistakes of society on here and let's make sure we all keep our integrity through thick and thin. Just because we all hide behind computers and keyboards doesn't make ANY of us less human. We all have feelings, goals, dreams, desires, faults, and we need to remember that!

Live your life to add value to others. If you're a consumer, you have every right to complain if you feel that you were misled in anyway but take a step back next time and ask yourself if you honestly are being cheated or if it's in your head. If you're a product creator, don't take advantage of consumers, they are the reason you are making money after all! Don't take short cuts, people are paying you because they want the value you provide. Remember, you aren't printing money....you are providing a service.

Let me know what you think! These are just the ramblings of a twenty-something who feels entitled to a nice cold beer right about now, but from time to time we need to take a step back and reflect.

Good day!
