Can we imagine a perfect mobile platform? Is it possible to come up with the universal ideas and form a vision of a perfect platform? We believe that has been done quite a few times. But are we likely to receive such a platform? Not really. None of the existing mobile platforms can be called a truly perfect one, and users choose them according to personal preferences and spheres of usage, accepting all their drawbacks. Maybe perfection lies somewhere between two dominating platforms - Android and iOS. Never can we say which one's better, but we can describe the qualities inherent in a perfect mobile platform. These qualities look quite natural, but just one word is too vague a definition. Let's figure out more closely, what we mean by them, and what we expect from a perfect mobile platform.
Convenience. Intuitive interface and navigation, convenience for the end users - that's what matters. After all, we purchase mobile devices for convenience in all that we do using them. Apple's iPhone introduced multi-touch, which was a replacement of mouse and stylus; meanwhile iOS has an intuitive UI that can be instantly handled by a kid. That's a well-known fact. A perfect platform is one that won't take time to get used to - every action is natural and requires minimum user's efforts.
Security. The issue of security on mobile devices is quite imperfect. A lost smartphone can cause problems for its owner - nobody wants his/her confidential data and a means of mobile payment in the wrong hands. Passwords shouldn't be the main way of protecting your data - biometric authorization is far more reliable. A perfect mobile platform will also utilize sophisticated protocols of encrypted data transmission.
Ecosystem. Okay, we don't see a perfect mobile platform as something that replaces desktops. We don't really consider that perfect smartphones must be self-sufficient devices. We don't need smartphones replacing laptops and PCs. But we need a single ecosystem where anyone is able to start a peculiar work on a laptop, then in case of need continue working on the same document on a tablet or a smartphone. Cloud storage, synchronization, integration - ideally natural and requiring no extra efforts by the user.
Mobility. Are current mobile devices mobile enough? That's arguable. While we can carry them everywhere, the issue of battery life is quite acute. By active use most of them can hardly last a day. But those who travel or work in the field, may simply have no opportunity to recharge them at a crucial moment. A perfect mobile platform must have proper devices, that will fully allow users to utilize all of its capabilities.
Apps. Most of the great mobile apps first move to iOS to pass the quality check. This takes more time and efforts than submitting and deploying an app on the Google Play market. That's why Android is quite attractive and open to new app projects. On the other hand we wouldn't consider control a bad thing. It's essential in preventing garbage apps and malware from getting to the phones of users. Control is great. But the closedness of iOS doesn't let software developers implement even more of its system capabilities in their creations. Ideally a platform must provide developers with maximum wide opportunities and tools, allowing to create quality products for software owners and end users. And here such efforts are made by the open-source Android. But it has to be as reliable as iOS.
So far it's impossible to create a perfect mobile platform. The long-present platforms have already shaped themselves. They may change only by our pleas for radical innovations, which there are rather few nowadays. But behind expanding these five qualities definitely lies the perfection - for end users to experience, for software owners to apply, and for software developers to create.
