One of the biggest myths you'll hear about in the world of internet business is that internet marketers use hidden secret techniques to get more traffic and customers to their website.

After reading hundreds of books from some of the best marketing gurus, I can tell you that by default none of the techniques they use can be secret, because if they were, no one would see them in action and they wouldn't be selling thousands of products every day. They are out there on the internet, on your TV and in the magazines for you to study right now.

Internet marketing professionals are not the innovators you would think they are, they simply study what has been proven to work before on a regular basis, and use the results as a blueprint for their own products and services. They have files packed with examples of top selling advertisements, web pages, headlines, graphics and more that have been used by existing successful campaigns. These files are called 'Swipe Files'.

The great thing about swipe files are that you can create your very own unique set yourself by running your own study on marketing that you know already works, and then use the same formula for your own products and services. Don't reinvent the wheel when someone else has a proven way to achieve the same goal, it's much quicker to follow an existing proven method to achieve the same aim.

Here's a really great example. In my spare time when I'm not running my website, I have a massive passion for buying and selling antique books. I mainly deal in early 20th Century fiction and non fiction on subjects that I have a deep interest in. I'll visit many second hand bookshops searching through the shelves for that elusive Sherlock Holmes 1st edition, or an early copy of a Darwin tome.

When I do get lucky and pick up a rare book for a bargain price, its then simply a case of selling it on eBay to the highest bidder, but how do I make sure that I get the highest market value I can from an online auction?

It's pretty simple, I go to my iPhone's eBay app and search for the same book, making sure I select the 'Completed items' and the 'Show sold items only' as part of the search criteria.

This will give me a listing of the books that have sold before, and what they made as a final sale price. I simply pick the listing that made the highest price, and clone out the listing. I add my own pictures to the listing and add a few words into the description. Every single time I either achieve the same price, and on some occasions exceed their results by a long way.

You too can apply this technique to your own website marketing and promotion. Go and study other websites in your field that you know are already successful. How are the websites laid out, what are they offering, what is the feel. What techniques are they using to attract customers. If it's working for them, it will most likely work for you.

Whilst copying work word for word will of course land you in deep copyright trouble, (and we're certainly not advocating that so don't do it!) there are no copyrights on ideas, so taking the essence, functionality and mechanics of a marketing campaign that is already producing results is the staple diet of the top internet marketing professionals. It should also be on your menu too if you want to guarantee the same success.
