What a question

There's a worrying aspect of our human nature...

If we plan a trip, or get invited to an important conference meeting out of town, or land an interview for a top paying job in a different city, there's one thing we always do...

...make sure we know how to get there!

If not, we'd be late, and likely miss that golden opportunity.

Heck, we meticulously plan our journey even when it's a holiday trip for the family. Why? Because we don't want to miss the plane, or waste time trying to find the hotel, thus losing money.

The thing I don't get however, is why we don't apply the same strict planning to our business. For example...
Often, we set a vague target of what we want to achieve, and then spend day after day going around in circles, guessing our way to the end...

Sure, we know roughly what is required, but without goals in place, it's like roughly knowing where the airport is, where the city is and where the accelerator is in your car. But if you don't tick off the points of the journey, you'll never know if you are on the right track, and you will end up doubting your own judgement.

Goals are the fastest way to get small rewards from day to day, and help us stay motivated as a result. They also help us knock down big tasks piece by piece (you know how the saying goes – what's the best way to eat an Elephant? One bite at a time!).
