Software as a service or SaaS for short is the a service distribution model whereby specialised software is hosted on the provider’s end and made available to customers over the web.
Features of a software as a service platform include:
Pay monthly – Companies pay a monthly/yearly fee to use the platform.
Service is provided online – A SaaS platform requires no physical download. You gain access with a simple username and password.
Software is updated automatically – There will never be a need to update your software manually. Everything will be taken care of at the hosts end.
Software as a service is a great way to gain access to a service that may otherwise cost a lot of money. A great example of software as a service is Adobe releasing Photoshop on licence. Instead of shelling out in excess of £1000 to purchase the product, customers can now pay a small monthly fee and use for as long as they require.
