Predicting Profit - Keyword and Niche Selection

There are generally two schools of thought when it comes to predicting profitable niches.

Use free and openly available online keyword tools to determine niches that are getting traffic. Then, research a way to carve your way into the niche you choose, unveiling phrases that are searched for, but under-served by the SERPs (low competition).
Focus on niches you are deeply knowledgeable about, and intuit phrases that are not yet appearing in keyword tools, but will be soon.
