Every guru will tell you that "the money is in the list".

And while it's true that I owe most of my success to my lists and other email promotions proving that email marketing is still a powerful direct marketing tool, but is it losing it's effectiveness, particularly in the "make money online" niche?

It seems the days of getting 20-30% click-through rates as they were a couple of years ago are gone. Now, an average of 10% is considered the norm. And this is from MY personal lists who know me and who I've been sending to for years.

Why the huge drop in email response?

I think there are two main cause of it.

One, list incest.

After numerous JV giveaways, ad swaps, and other various JV cross-promotions, my subscribers are on other marketers lists and their subscribers are on my lists.

So when it comes time to promote a new product or opportunity, the chance of them getting more than one email for the same email product/offer increases.

Two, too much email.

I try not to send out too much email for starters. Once or twice a week at most.

And in these emails, I try to keep a good balance between content,tips and promotional offers, and not all together in the same email.

Once a week I'll send an email lesson with great tips and very little promotion...maybe a few links to recommended products in the bottom. When I find a great product I want to promote, it will be a hard pitch.

But when you're on half a dozen marketers lists getting the same amount of emails and more, then it can be too much and the majority of all emails, regardless of who its from, can end up in the junk box.

Especially when you're on numerous "making money" newsletter lists, the number of new product releases in this market is enough for anyone to start junking emails without a second look.

So how much more life does email marketing have?

I can see email marketing being one of the top methods of direct internet marketing for as long as people use email...which I am willing to bet will be a while yet.

However, people are now using many other methods to communicate besides email.

There are sites like twitter, facebook, myspace, and instant messaging programs which are becoming very popular. And of course there have been ways developed for using these new communication methods for marketing and monetization.

So my advice is if you're going to use email marketing in this day and age, do it with precision. Email recipients aren't what they used to be. You'll have to work harder to build a reputation and relationship of trust with your "list" subscribers.

Remember, people on your list are people, not numbers. The same goes for anyone you can contact online. The internet is becoming much more personal so you need to take a personal approach to be successful online today.

    So if lists are dying, how do you suggest promoting? Sites like make it very difficult to advertise through profiles.
