At its heart, affiliate marketing is like most internet marketing but there are some tips you need to know to tilt the balance in your favour and get more affiliate commissions.

1. Choose your affiliate programs wisely

By this I mean you're looking for programs that are likely to be around for the long haul.

If the site is new and the affiliate program isn't handled by one of the big companies (Clickbank, etc) then you need to be especially cautious unless you know the owner's track record.

2. If you're allowed to, cloak your links

Not all affiliate programs allow you to use a link cloaker as it can mess with the stats they use to determine how well you're performing.

But if you are allowed to cloak a link, I think it's worth doing as it stops browsers showing an ugly affiliate link with your tracking info in it.

If you're using WordPress, there are plugins like Pretty Link that will allow you to create these links easily.

3. If possible, track your clicks

Clickbank and a lot of other affiliate programs allow you to put a tracking link on your links so you know which link was clicked.

Over time, this can help you work out where your most successful affiliate promotions are coming from.

Whilst it's not good to be continually obsessing over stats, it pays to check them over every now and again so that you can focus your affiliate marketing on the area that gets results.

4. Don't just be a "me too" affiliate

There are too many bland sites out there - the ones where 30 seconds after closing the tab you can't remember what the site was called.

To stand out amongst the millions of sites available - thousands of which are likely in your niche - you can't be bland.

That doesn't mean auto starting videos, tickertapes running across the foot of the screen or other eye candy.

It means make your words count.

Prove to your readers that you're a real human being and you'll be rewarded with more sales. That's why so many successful diet sites are closer to personal diaries.

I've seen that same diary approach used in other niches and it's hard to compete with because there's a personal story being told and there's often interaction between the site and its visitors.

5. Build a list

It's all very well attracting traffic to your affiliate site and making one off sales.

But it's much nicer to have a list of people who've raised their hand and want to find out more about the niche you're both interested in.

Most affiliates leave a lot of money on the table because they don't build a list and don't build a relationship with that list.
