How does one start learning Conversion Rate Optimization?
 

Hey everyone,

As the thread title says, how should one start with an aim to become a CRO consultant?

Are there any skills that you should already be proficient in (Javascript, Web Analytics etc)?

Is it a lucrative career option?

I want to move away from SEO as it has become almost a commodity to offer as a service,
with no guaranteed results for the client.

CRO looks far more promising, with exact numbers and data that can be quantified and
results measured quickly.

Here are some resources for learning CRO:

Tim Ash wrote the book on Landing Page Optimization .

Marketing Experiments is a great resource. They conduct Web Clinics, and publish a Research Directory.

Chris Gowards' book You Should Test That!

Peep Laja's blog ConversionXL.

For Analytics checkout Avinash Kaushik's blog Occam's Razor, and his book Web Analytics 2.0.

Wow! So many links and learning materials.Thank you very much. But how long does it usually take to change business specialization: from SEO to CRO? Is there some statistics that CRO is better than SEO?

GosuCommerce SEO and CRO are 2 totally different things.
SEO is mostly about quality content and link building, while CRO is how you optimize the look and feel of a page in order to convert a user to customer

SEO gets the traffic to the site.

CRO converts the traffic once its there.

BUT... CRO can be used offsite to increase the conversion of say a FB ad or even a search engine description. These practices, obviously assist SEO in bringing in traffic.

The first and the most important thing you need to learn is A/B testing. It is the first step towards CRO.

You have to learn how to serve people first, then turn those loyal visitors of your blog into regular customers.

Create a useful blog or website.
SEO your content.
Have squeeze page or subscription box in your blog.
Follow up your subscriber
Make sales.

That way, you are doing 2 things, SEO and CRO.

In terms of being lucrative, I think CRO is super lucrative BUT you get far fewer clients than you would when you're doing SEO. The reason behind that is - everyone needs traffic. But not everyone needs to make a sale or close a lead online. In any case, CRO is a step further after SEO or a steady souruce of traffic has been established so expect far fewer qualified clients.

SEO is changing but it doesn't mean it's going to be replaced by another method ..

As long as you will have search engines and people searching for content online, there will still be a need for search engine optimisation.

Yes I agree that the tactics or methods that people try to trick the algoritm will require constant changes from the main search engines to prevent people from making a quick gain to rank higher.

I think that you can learn it in addition to the experiance you have with SEO as people are now more aware of CRO.
