Feedback on conversion from free subscription to paid

I have a site where I am offering a free plan and a two paid plans.

Most people pick the free plan. We have limited the options with the free plan to try and get the people to pick the paid.

BUT

Looking for ideas to get people to pick the paid plan. Paid plan is $5 a month so its not a lot.

Out thoughts were to make the free plan a trial for 30 days.

Any other ideas on how to get people to pick the $5 a month plan rather then the free plan?

Looking for experts to chime in here.

The problem with offering "free" with knocked back features, is you are presenting your product at less than desirable. I would offer the regular product free for 7 days that converts to the $5.00 plan

Spotify apps gives you one week free of pro services, then they gives you a beta. Follow this example, offer a Pro version for two weeks to your users, and then change to a beta version.

90% of all the services I use right now started as a free trial WITH all features. If I can't judge how useful it is to me but instead I get only a demo, I won't pay for the full fee. Take the example of Basecamp. It is free for 59 days and then $20/month (lowest plan). Because I've actually used it in those 59 days, I've stayed with them for over 2 years.

If you're looking for a way for your current free 'buyers' to get to the paid plan, then find an angle, a method that utilize your paid plan feature.

Shoot a video, or an article, or whatever to teach them How To Do XXX In XX Days, and in the process, show them how you're using your paid plan feature to simplify the entire process.

If you're looking to convert traffic straight to paid plan buyers, simply do as the others suggested.

Hope that helps!

Some great advice given above. Giving people full access allows them to really see how valuable your membership can be. I am a member of a site that is doing something similar to what you are doing. Something that they do each time you log in as a free member is present you the option to upgrade your account. It's basically a sales page every time I log in showing me the benefits of the premium option. This gets me thinking every time I log in to my free account. Obviously you can disregard the sales page to get to your free content but you are reminded every time you log in. I am sure they get great results from this as I have been a member of that site in the past.
