If you want to increase conversion rate then increase ranking and optimize landing page for better conversions.Check the analytics if it is working to measure goal.

He means don't bother with split-testing petty stuff like button colors until you get down the basics.

Orange arrow versus Red arrow... Who cares about that if the page is broken, or you have gaudy graphics, or you're using a font size 5x bigger than it should be... or... or...

Now you understand, right? :)

Where do I find "the basics"?

I am most interested in "rules" like font size.

Font size is interesting and has a lot to do with the age demographic you are after. basically the older the target the larger he font needs to be. I have read more than a few studies that would suggest 14pt is a better than good starting point.

I don't think I have ever read a "Case Study" on the issue, but it was more of what the Jones' doing type of write up. So does font size affect conversion.. I would have to say I be it does. I bet there is such thing as to small before there is such thing as to big.

Yes. Def. interesting.

I am also looking for the majors, not the minors. So a minor would be: Color button.

But, where can I learn more about the majors when it comes to CRO and UX?

ooo this is a hard one to answer. in CRO there are no "Answers" there are only results ( I know you didn't want to hear that ) I personally.. wouldn't even go as far to say that there are major and minor elements. its how they all work together.

You simply cant say.. ok I am going to start with this layout and these colors and this button color etc. and have a good base to start with.

Resources would be meclabs for example. they have TONS of example studies. great videos that start to break down why things work and don't - and even with that you will find other studies that may indicate the exact opposite.

If you were to look at WordPress Amazon Affiliate Store Builder Plugin - Prosociate as an example. I would consider this page to be very text bookish best practices. A lot of the style that I try to follow is done here. consistent use of color. consistent use of text font. decent white space. and you get down to the lower CTA and all the rules went out the window and that bright yellow BUY NOW button just screams click me. ( its perfect ) If that button was Orange.. would still do the trick. red.. probably still do the trick. the same green as the rest of the page and the previous CTA... may not be as effective.

But the rule for CTA buttons is "Contrast" that's kinda it. does it pop off the page as compared to the rest of the pages content. is it screaming?

So there are these kinda rules.. Contrast and font size and white space and all of these things.. and I could show you pages that break all the rules and convert pretty well Oldnavy.com | Old Navy as an example. ctas are pretty much black and white. there are 4 6 different fonts. there is blue and pink and orange and black headlines all over. BUT unlike the previous page... there is no doubt what the USP is.. well ok thee maybe, there is like 4 of them.. hmmm that's not like them. ( I watch Gap, and its online properties - they are constantly changing, and one is assuming testing and changing )

So again no easy answer.. its like every man is out for themselves. there is no rhyme or reason, and no rules. ( kinda like neverland - exept when Wendy is there )

Then, until your audience is big enough you can A/B test it's pretty much what you like to look at and look at what others do.

Ofcourse you can also do some quality interviewing and let people you know browse your site
