5 Dumb Mistakes to Avoid in Landing Pages
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Landing pages are a pivotal component of the marketing strategy that tends to provoke the site visitors to take a specific action. They are standalone pages that do all of the work on their own. Landing pages can be beneficial in evoking the interest of prospective buyers in the website, or to say in the business’s products.

Landing pages are used to direct traffic and in turn, help its creator earn some cash. However, many of the landing pages are absurdly loaded with irrelevant and distracting links that force the visitors to exit the website. So, it is very important to design the landing pages with an insight into trending design and content strategies.

There are six dumb mistakes that you could avoid while designing a landing page. These mistakes are so frequent that even the most seasoned organization falls prey to them.

Call to action button
The main component of a landing page is the CTA button. If there are too many other links, it can easily distract the viewers and overshadow the main purpose. Also, the color theme coherence of CTA’s with the whole website’s theme is often overlooked. Garish color combinations are often used to highlight the CTA’s, which inevitably marks their effectiveness for users while navigating. So, color contrasts need to be chosen wisely as same colors would not pique the interest of the audience.

Expecting too much from Videos
Who doesn’t love videos? They are a great way of getting your message across with minimum efforts. But when it comes to landing pages, it’s a huge no-no.
Why? Because half of your viewers wouldn’t be interested in watching the video and the other half would want to quickly skim through the content to pick out the main information.
But if the content is missing and a video is in its place, then you can easily guess how many people would be interested in watching the video.
Zero? That’s right.

Usage of Jargons
If you want the world to feel petty about not knowing the meaning of specific terms, go on and make use of marketing jargons on the landing pages. However, if you want to see positive results, it’s better to give those terms a rest.
You don’t want the viewers to keep a dictionary with them every time they land on your landing page.

Low-quality pictures
Everybody loves pictures when they are in high quality. The usage of professional and real pictures creates an environment of trust.
Pictures of low-quality and unprofessional nature trick the visitors into taking you lightly.
This will be the death of your landing page.

Fake or in-house testimonials

The viewers refer to testimonials as a source for establishing the trust for a website. But a little mistake in them could leave a negative impression on the prospective leads. Similarly, using fake pictures with authentic testimonials is also a huge no-no.
Protect the identity of your customers. Refrain from using fake pictures. Don’t. Use. Fake. Pictures. At. All.

These mistakes can happen to anyone; even the most established businesses are committing these errors on a daily basis. Just learn from these mistakes and prepare a bombastic landing page.

I do agree with all possible cons as shown here of overusing CRO techniques for the landing pages. Below are some of the mistake, which I believe one should avoid in landing pages.
1. Bad typography
2. No Unique Selling Proposition (USP)
3. No Image
4. No Clear List of Benefits
Hope this will help.

Videos still attract me but when the content of the video isn't attractive, I won't watch the rest of it.

Nice tips!
There's so much detail that one can get into if you really have to understand how the viewers will behave and respond to the offers that are made on the landing pages.
You simply cannot discard one thing as not working (or working) depending upon the response you get from the visitors. They're highly moody people and you simply can't predict them.
There are a few things like not asking for too much details, keeping things as simple as possible, not making things that would distract etc. while allowing the user to consume what he really wants is a real challenge.

I do not want to disagree with videos, but say it must depend on what you are marketing.

And also, not having your landing page mobile optimized. It is amazing the number of sites I see with no mobile optimization when researching.

I agree, however I would not discourage people from using video.. I think ONLY using a video on your page is usually a poor decision, but if you have a video and also text so you can get your point across quickly either way that is a winning combination.

Agreed!! Make sure your CTA appears above the fold and the color is consistent with your website while standing out. Use power words and first person to elicit a response. Personalize your CTA's and create multiple variations to cater to the different personas that visit your website.

How about having the video NOT auto-play and have a nice informative picture (thumbnail is it called?) presented paused on it?

I'm surprised no one mentioned this: not adding a sense of urgency or scarcity.

You see, most people people want what they can't have, and absolutely hate feeling like they missed out on something. So you capitalize on that--you let them know there are only so many free accounts of your wonderful service. Before I did this, my site was getting traffic but no sign-ups.

If I was lucky, maybe two people would sign up in three months. When I added a "free accounts remaining" countdown letting people know the site won't always be free, it ramped up, at first slowly then rapidly: one or two every week, then a couple every other day, and now it's not unheard of to get several per day.

As long as you have the right traffic, it'll supercharge your sign-ups.

Mark my words and remember starkintern; you'll thank me when you're counting your millions.

I agree, sometimes i think people forget about the call to action button. They just write subscribe or submit or similar.

I also think the CTA button placement is quite important, Having one only on the bottom reduces your chances of a sell

Great Points. These are the common mistakes done by everyone at some point of time. I remember writing something similar last year on blog with 11 landing page mistakes.

I think the major mistake that people do is wrong landing page. Suppose, you have seen a nice pair of shoes and click on the picture. But if you land in some different page that does not include that particular shoe, you will feel disgusting. This is the main reason why ecommerce websites face higher bounce rate. This is one of the major mistake.
