High bounce rate using Google Optimise

So, we've been trailing Google Optimise. Love it. Except... we experience an exceptionally high bounce rate across all variations (even baseline).

Normal baseline bounce is around 5%, this jumps to 90% once we run optimise.

I've done cross browser checks and no issues there.

Implementation was through UA with the additional GTM code (not tag manager).

I've now discontinued the experiment as I can't find anything on the web about this issue.

NOTE: It seems Google now only allow us to use the Global Tag Analytics code. UA isn't even available anymore. I've swaped this out on our site now, and interestingly, as I hadn't stopped the experiment at this point, I thought I'd see if it works with Optimise. It doesn't. Having said that, in the set-up, Optimise only gives you instructions of how to insert the GTM code for UA, not Global Tag. I could guess...but my gut tells me there isn't instructions as Global Tag doesn't work with Optimise. Which is a little short sighted of Google if this is indeed the case.
