You'd think cheesy or crazy headlines for ads/ landing pages would make it seem spammy.

reason I ask is that someone once told me a web page I created looked spammy :(

For me, Creativologist, I would see anything that has a pointless or unnecessary sign in it as spam. So when the OP says to use $, @, *, etc., I will ignore that myself.

Secondly, any kind of disconnect between the advert and the page itself: the message should be clear and consistent.

Thirdly, and I may be a bit on my own in this one, I find that anything that comes remotely close to pushing me in a direction I don't want to go in makes me click away. So, any pop ups, big aggressive arrows, all that kind of thing.

I'm currently in the process of designing an LP for a new service and it is so far clean, concise and pretty sparse. I know that's what I'd want if I was looking for this.

ya more or less what I'm finding is working...

Also if possible through up a popup chat window at the bottom right...

we are getting a lot of chats that allow us to open up chats

We just added a chat box in the lower right. It's been pretty effective.

Whats the psychology behind unattractive sites verse attractive sites? Does anyone know? Im just curious why it effects visitors behavior.

This would be the article I refer to the most regarding the subject Measuring The Visual Appeal of Websites I love the concept of "What is usable is beautiful" I believe that is the tipping point that would have to be most looked at. Regardless of the "Appearance" of the page, its the "Usability" that determines the over all determination of the page.

Kind of what this does is factor out the "Ugly" that use bright colors with contrasting text, or scattered messaging and the like. Those are the elements that would reduce usability.

Another interesting set of studies you can go Google is the use of dating sites. It is better to be Good looking or ugly, and not so good to be "Cute". It more than implies that in terms of "Looks" its an all or nothing proposition, and anything in the middle can and will fall short.

So you can see then you can even apply the general idea of the dating site information, and look at again at the original question and see that you are better off to have a Good Looking site, or a Bad looking site. Anything in the middle is simply not considered.

savidge4, interesting point. I think usability is a much better guideline to effective LP than saying making it ugly. what is ugly? it's subjective and a fine line at that.

From my experience, clean cut and no fuss design work with minimal distracting elements works best. You don't want to take attention away from the headline, which is the main hook.
