Help With An Under Performing Adsense Website
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hi guys, thought I'd post this here and get some opinions from you.

I have a website that I monetize with Adsense which is getting about 40 visitors a day, and has been a proven earner on adsense. I don't want to change anything about the site, or try and get any more traffic with it, I just want to see how much I can make per day with it as its pretty stable.

I have tried some really random "A/B" testing if i could even call it that, but I changed the theme around every couple of months to see if i could try to increase it with a fluke.

Here is a pick of the earnings over about a year. You can tell when Iv fiddled around because the earnings change, as the traffic has stayed mostly the same.

How should I go about properly split testing this with Adsense to achieve the best result I can?How many uniques should i clock before I change the layout to get more results? 500? 1000?

I'd like the testing to be quite rapid as I'd like to see results quickly, or at least gather data better.

Is it a Blog or a Static site?

Is any keyword ranking higher in search result?

40 visitors a day is too less to expect anything from Adsense; you will have to get more traffic to make some decent income from Adsense.

It's a static site. And if you look at the picture you will see that it is earning money with 40 hits per day, but I want to earn more.

Looks like you need some a/b testing, think about using something like Optimizely, Convert

you'll be able to create variations of you page and see what performs best, with the low amount of traffic you have it might take a while to see a clear winner but sooner you starter the sooner you can improve earnings.

pm me if you need any help with it

You're going to have to move some things around to REALLY test.

Layout - Go for a more minimalist/simple theme compared to a crazy magazine theme

Ad positions
&
Niche (voip is going to pay more than say, squid tentacles, if you want to make a new site)

are just a couple things that you could possibly

Also I would suggest sending more traffic if you don't have a high paying niche for your site.

A low paying niche and low traffic are not really an ideal combination

With 40 visitors a day your testing is going to be far from quick. You really want at least 1000 visitors across a change to make a semi adequate determination. so for you to make a very simple A / B test you are talking 2000 visitors and 50 days. ( not quick at all )

Hi, great answer, but in actual fact, due to the great niche and a CTR of 4.17% average over the last year, would it be ok to use something like 400 visitors?

A 4% CTR on a content side is very high already.

You are wasting time optimizing a site that brings just 120 Pounds a year. Where do you think it will go? 200 Pounds?

You are better off trying alternative monetization:
- convert visitors to a mailing list
- try amazon.com or other affiliates

Personally, I would rather look to see which pages drive traffic with what keywords and try to scale this up, either on this domain or on other websites.

You see what brings you 40 visitors per day. Take that to 400.

That CTR is great! Assuming your bounce rate is low and time on page is good, I would focus on building more traffic with good content and lots of it.

A few hundred bucks is nice, but triple your content; triple your earnings over time.

Everyone has their own methods of testing. I personally try to test across the same traffic patterns etc to my sites. So if I make an A test on Monday I will wait until next Monday to make the B test. If you are running a test Monday through Sunday, using my practices you would run the flip test the following Monday through Sunday.

So why do I do it this way you ask? If you are using non paid traffic and you pay attention to your daily traffic flow you will see there ends up being a pattern. Monday is decent Tuesday through Thursday are peaks and then Friday falls off to Monday levels and the weekend Saturday Sunday tend to be somewhere in the half of peak area.

So in testing and understanding your sites flow you can make some assumptions. on any given day that you test you are probably in one way shape or form reaching the same profile of people on that day of the week every week. For A / B testing to be effective ( In my opinion ) you want to as much as possible bring across the same profiled traffic across the test area as you can.

With PPC and the like, your traffic is targeted and this is not such an issue. ( Aside from a probable Male / Female flux dependent on time of day - and this would depend on the product / service obviously )

I will say I have played with this theory quite a bit. The results I get on Monday may vary from what I get on say Thursday. More often than not ( 95% )... not in the overall result of the test, but more in the percentages of difference. weekends on the other hand... I have found maybe out of 40% of my testing with this, that these results may contradict week day results.

In your case if you are going to run a low traffic test I would run with the 1 week vs 1 week model and see how that works for you.

Hope that Helps!

It helped a lot, and I think I'm going to use this method. You could'nt be more correct about your fluctuation predictions btw.

For some reason can't see a bigger image when I click on it. Oh well, I can see the jist of that image. Looks like your traffic is more smooth and predictable than mine, but it varies lol.

It's funny, as almost all of my traffic comes from Google, and I can't figure out for the life of me why people search these random terms more often on certain days. It's not like the website is a "facts about monday" website lol.

Yeah I still haven't figured out how to insert images... Im a moron or something.. the dips in my traffic is actually Saturday and Sunday. And that site in particular I am showing is for WordPress and WooCommerce. I guess people don't program sites on week ends or something! ha ha
