Looking to volunteer for small to medium projects to enhance my portfolio.

Hello,

I'm looking to get my start as a freelance writer. I do have a portfolio. However, I am looking to volunteer for some small to medium projects to build my portfolio even more.

Please send me a private message if you are interested. I am more than happy to send my portfolio upon request.

Thank you

Yes! That's what I'm talking about.

Btw, some advice: I'd write a small pitch and post it in the Wanted - Warriors Looking To Hire You section, as a [Reviewers Wanted] thread.

    Good luck.

I agree posting a pitch in the Wanted Section would be a great idea. What do you think about the pitch I have written below?

      Hello,

I'm looking to get into freelance writing. I would like to volunteer for some small to medium projects. This will give me the opportunity to build my skills and portfolio.
I have a portfolio I can show upon request.

Please do not let the fact that I am doing this as a volunteer reflect negatively on the product I will produce. I will work just as hard and diligently on your project as I would any project I was being paid to complete. Doing so is the only way I will get anything out of this endeavor.
I have done work in various fields. I do not mind conducting research in order to become familiar with the topics.

This is a win-win for both of us. Please take a chance and allow me the opportunity to help you complete your project. Please send me a private message if you are interested.

Less about you, more about the client.

Real talk: they don't give a shit about your opportunities and your portfolio. Even if you're working for free, all they care about are the results you can give them, the benefits you provide. Otherwise you're a waste of time and therefore EXPENSIVE. Time is money.

Reframe this. Get in the potential client's head.

And once you've figured out what value you have to offer, charge for it. Even a pittance.

It weeds out some of the bottom feeders who are just trying to get free stuff, and it makes you feel like you're a real writer.

Now you also need to figure out something - are you just a freelance writer? 'Cause copywriting is a HIGHLY specialized branch within freelancing that is VERY different from article/blog writing.

Based on the OP's "pitch" he must be talking about article or technical writing. Certainly not copywriting.

The "pitch" has no persuasiveness whatsoever.

He's new Alex, give him a break.

And yea, OP, what Angie said, for starters. When you're writing the piece, keep refocusing your attention on how you're client is going to benefit from hiring you, not how good you are or what you'll get, etc.

        Hope that helps.

          Cam,

You would do well if you didn't issue commands to me or anybody else here on this forum. It's unseemly... especially coming from someone of your age and experience.

The OP obviously doesn't know s--t from Shinola about persuasion... and that's a fact.

I'll just move on to this last comment for the sake of not getting into a flame war...

Yea, that's because he's new to Copywriting. I didn't know "s--t from Shinola" (whatever that means) about Copywriting when I first started out and neither did you, so take it easy.

Once again you miss a clearly stated point, so I'll repeat it from my earlier post:
"Based on the OP's "pitch" he must be talking about article or technical writing. Certainly not copywriting."
So responding to him like he's a new copywriter isn't appropriate.

          He's new? So what?

Someone clearly didn't do their homework.

Yea, I agree, but maybe he's new to reading books on Copywriting as well. Plus, it's difficult to sell yourself as a Copywriter with no experience, no portfolio, etc. His only real selling point is price (or lack thereof).

Not much of a selling point for somebody brand new to copywriting I'm afraid.

Of course it is. You see it on here all the time copywriters who don't use copywriting skills in their appeals and wso's. Use the skills you are trying to hire out to sell yourself.

As a owner of multiple business’ I can promise you I will take ability over experience everyday of the week.

I think you're missing the point. OP is not demonstrating much in the way of copywriting skills with either of the posts. Ability to string sentences together? Yes. Copywriting? No.

The way the original question is framed leads me to believe the interest is in content writing, NOT copywriting. In copywriting, skill matters.

Pretty obvious he's a content writer. So the argument is moot.
