1st, 3rd, or Does It Matter?

I am working on copy for a site where I rent space to businesses. Since I am writing about other businesses, not mine, I am writing in the 3rd person. Is this OK or should I write in the 1st person?

Which makes better sales copy, 1st person, 3rd person, or does it even matter?

    I think:

    3rd person: More strict and professional -- Good for B2B B2C.

    1st person: Friendly.
  • Hmmm Is the copy so that they will rent from you and pay you money, or are you writing copy for them on your website?

    • Writing copy for them. Businesses are using my site as one way to promote their business. Rather than making a business provide us with content, I write the content for them.

      I have been writing in 3rd person, but it occurred to me that 1st person may be better. Since I am not a trained copywriter, I thought that I would ask which is better or if it even makes a difference.

  • Two words: Test it.

    Most people prefer to buy from a person, not a vague entity or website. Which is why 1st person almost always outpulls 3rd person in B2C sales letters -- it turns the process into a personal conversation. But there's always an exception to any rule. So create two versions and test them. You might just get a major bump in response.

    Because from what you are saying. Your website is the authority that is representing other websites. So the authority of your website gives other websites social proof.


    Then if you write in 1st person there is less of a foreign connection between your website and the others that are on your website. You are putting your name on the line for these other websites. Also a family element establishes trust.


    Yeah your best bet is to test it. I read in an article post on how Dell has 1000 landing pages aimed at specific audiences.
