How would you spend 1 hour a week with a Copy Pro?

I started working in-house for one of the top direct marketers in the country. I work as an assistant to the Copy Chief of my company.

I do a lot of b*tch work, but sometimes I write advertorials/lifts and I even edit sales pages now and then for our newer guys.

When I took the job, I told them my goal is to be an in-house writer here and they told me this could be a reality. Last week, the Copy Chief told me he is going to start sitting down with me one hour per week so I can transition to writing full sales packages one day.

He said we'll do whatever I want for that hour.

Now, obviously I was ecstatic because I never thought that would actually happen. But I'm also dumbfounded...I have no idea how I should make the best use of this time?

My current idea is to have him give me a lead assignment, and I'll write a 4-5 page lead in my spare time. And then we will spend the hour each week adjusting it. But I wanted to reach out to my friends on WF to see if they have better ideas than that.

Thank you!

Just tell him to teach you what he knows about Copywriting, for a while. Once you've got the hang of it, maybe do some Copywriting and have him critique for a while.

In the beginning, just have him drop knowledge on your head.

    Edit: Post 999.

My students get a lot out of critiques. I give them an assignment and then review their work.

Over the course of a few weeks write a sales letter, and each time you meet with your boss, ask him to review what you have so far. His corrections and explanations should be a big help.

Also during the week, if any questions about copywriting arise, write 'em down and ask them too.

Apart from the ideas above you can also ask him to go over his own
copy and explain his reason behind the copy. That would also be a great
    way to pick his brain.

I think your idea is an excellent use of your time with your boss. Good luck, and I hope you make the leap to FT copywriter.

What you suggest, plus what Ray suggests would be a good way to go about it I reckon...

And once you've got a hot lead finished and approved, you could bang out the rest of your promo with him... few pages a week and you'd have a completed promo in a couple of months.

Even if it's something that never goes out, having your hand held by a master for a whole promo would be pretty valuable.
