Hi

I'd really love to start a career in freelance copywriting. Is it a good idea to use specs as your portfolio?

Whatever YOU wrote and want to show off then can be used as part
of your portfolio. The trick is to use specs that are as close as possible
to what your prospects are looking for.

If you don't have a portfolio from real clients, then there's nothing wrong with using specs. But they better be damn good.

Spec work means producing a piece of work for a client without any guarantee that your work will be published in any way, so dont if you ask me, with that you are uncovering yourself.

Spec work doesn't seem professional but like Jennifer said, it's ok to use it if you don't have any ''real work''.

I would disguise the company involved in any spec work you are posting in your portfolio. You don't want a potential client to check up on you where you were not hired to do the work.
