Struggling to make it as a copy writer? Can't find the right market that fits your writing style, knowledge or experience? Looking for a book publisher or literary agent?

Or maybe you want your articles published in magazines. Periodicals that end up in the hands of pre-qualified paid subscribers - 100% focused on an industry you are deeply involved with, but where to look or who to contact about your writing samples, queries or skills eludes you.

Then head over to your local bookstore or search online and grab a copy of the 890 page behemoth, 'Writer's Market 2016' (Retails: US $29.99/Can $33.99).

What you'll find inside is a map to ideas, contacts, resources that will turn your passion for writing into a business where you can say, 'bye, bye' to the 9-5.

Starting at page 1 and schooling you all the way to the end of page 109. Editor - Robert Lee Brewer face plants you with 19 in-depth articles from such freelance writers as Carol Tice, award winning journalist Mridu Khullar Relph and pubished author Sage Cohen.

Article titles such as:
  • 15 Blogging Tips - Page 104
  • How Much Should You Charge (Includes 16 page pay rate chart) - Page 82
  • Query Letter Clinic - Page 14
  • 7 Habits of Financially Savvy Writers - Page 68
  • Landing The Six Figure Deal - Page 24
  • Using Video To Promote Your Work - Page 100
If that wasn't enough to get your fingers clicking the keyboard do note; we've only scratched the surface. The real meat and potatoes comes from the remaining 781 category, subcategory and resource pages, divided into 6 sections still to go and dig through.

Sections:

Literary Agents - 36 Pages
Book Publishers - 228 Pages
Consumer Magazines - 259 Pages
(44 Categories - Each consumer magazine is listed under their specific category)
Trade Journals - 81 Pages
(65 Categories - Each trade journal is listed under their specific category)
Contests & Awards - 103 Pages
(10 Categories - Each contest or award subject is listed under their specific category)
Resources, Glossary & Index - 68 Pages

Wow - I almost forgot to mention the exclusive webinar on "Building a Readership" by Editor Robert Lee Brewer.

      Spam? Really!

Where's the link that takes you away from the page to buy?

State the names of vendors, stores or online spots I tell you to go so I profit from your purchase?

Oh...wait...it's because I suggested old school stuff - a paper desk reference with lists of contacts, what they want, how they want you to submit your work and how you can approach them for your business.

      Yeah...

...you should stay away from this content.

Ummm...unless you're referring to a spammy post that's already been deleted, I have no clue what you're talking about.

Writer's Market is a great resource I've shared with new writers for years now.

That also happens to be a useful, recognized resource that copywriters (and all writers, really) can rely on and reference.

Unlike self promoting plugs with products of dubious nature, this is one that can actually be put to use.

I'll even do you one better: your local library may have one you can reference for the paltry sum of a residential library card.

I know that's how I started out and figured out a rate/pricing structure.

          Advertorial?

Try Synopsis. A noun. A brief summary or general survey of something.

And you want to be a successful copy writer...

          ...Okay

The only person making assumptions is you. You claim spam but can't back it up with proof...i.e. link(s), names of businesses I directed the reader too, or contact numbers, or external websites.

  • I'm not going to get into any argy bargy (an argument) about this.

    Everyones got an opinion.

But I'm fine with anyone who takes the time to post something useful and relevant to us here copywriters.

And as I'm based in good old blighty (unless my trusted contacts in the USA had told me about it) I would probably not have found out about "The Writers Market."

    I'm glad TPG mentioned it.

I very rarely comment anymore, but I just came on to thank you for this. I'm in the UK and didn't know about it ...

... and to laugh at the 'internationally published author' who who obviously doesn't have a clue.

Thanks TPG. I browse this reference every year. Didn't know it was out yet.

Rates in the "How Much Should You Charge" section impress me more as wishful thinking and guesswork than data from any real industry survey. I mean what kinda rates would you expect Writer's Digest to quote? (Yep-- the kind that feed newbie dreams and gets them to buy more WD product...)

Here's a sample from an old edition -- https://www.writersmarket.com/assets...d_I_Charge.pdf. They quote $1,500 (high) to $125 (low) for a single press release, with an average of almost $500.

Who's getting $500 for a press release these days? Let alone, $1,500... (Maybe some well-connected hollywood publicist? Outside of that scenario, I think it's unrealistic...)

Is there a section in the book that's of interest to writers of sales copy or other persuasive writing?

It would depend on what type of contact information you are looking for when marketing your services. That's an area only you would know.

Let me rephrase my question this way: In the context of this discussion board, how does the book help?

        Here's the context...
        Copywriting

          Straight up research.

Example: Page 654 under Trade Journals in the subcategory of Business Management is a company, Cygnus Business Media. They are a parent company with over 300+ trade publications and magazines.

I've submitted articles to them and had them published from 2010-2013. Cygnus allowed bylines, which in turned brought in brochure and white paper projects for the B2B clients.

In summary - Wrote and submitted articles, readers seeing the articles contacted me to inquire about my freelance commercial writing services mentioned in my byline.

All due to using a research tool such as Writer's Market. So the power of the byline words helped me bring in more writing business.

Ok y'all, calm down. This IS a great resource and it led me to my first nationally published article. Whether it's being "promoted" or not, Writers' Market is a very helpful tool if you're looking to get into the publishing world. Sounds like they're getting into the digital world now, too (finally).

    I love that!

PS: It aligns with what I learned back in the 90's. Although I used it as a marketing strategy for my business, not initially as a way to generate income. (Although after I understood the value, of course, I charged.)
