Do these multi-colored sales letters seriously work?

The reason I ask is that I'm trying to wrap my head around what makes people buy in direct mail (I have several MMO licensed products to flog), and I couldn't in good conscience write that mess.

Imagine opening your envelope and being hit by all those colors? Johnson boxes, flashy drawings, pictures of beaches, etc....that works in 2015?

A compelling offer that channels a mass desire will always pull.

EDIT: It ain't clean, but there's a lot of movement and variety in the design. Remember, the online reading experience differs greatly from the offline. Distractions are just a click away. It isn't pretty, but it works.

So what would be the offline direct mail style letter for the same sort of product?

I agree with you that in this case it is overdone. If you emphasize everything,
then NOTHING is emphasized. As a rule of thumb you don't want to use
more than 2 elements of emphasis. So don't BOLD capitalized and italicize
at the same time. This letter has bold, color, italics, underline, yellow highlighting!!!
    (One "!" is enough.)

Kennedy says 36 pt Red Tahoma is good for the headline based on stats tracking.
as for sub heads and highlighting, not sure but I like a navy blue style to differentiate a bit.

This may look a bit colorful but black and white can look dull.
